Botanical name: Zingiber zerumbet
Family: Zingiberaceae (Ginger Family)
Status: Polynesian-introduced
Where found: Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i, Hawai‘i, O‘ahu & Kaua‘i
Water/Light: Moist, with partial shade
Elevation range: 0 to 3,000 feet
Height: Up to 6 feet

Notes: In Hawai‘i, the spicy-smelling roots of ‘awapuhi are pounded and used medicinally to treat indigestion and severe sprains. These aromatic roots are also used to perfume stored kapa cloth. In the kitchen, the fragrant leaves and stalks of ‘awapuhi are added to pork and fish to enhance flavors as they cooked in underground ovens (imu). Perhaps the most common use of ‘awapuhi is as a shampoo and conditioner. The clear and sudsy juice from the mature flower heads softens and brings shine to the hair. ‘Awapuhi is a kinolau of the Hawaiian god, Kane.

Silversword generally refers to a group of plants in the Argyroxiphium genus, native to Hawaii. These unique plants are known for their sword-like leaves and distinctive silvery hairs. The Haleakalā silversword, in particular, is a rare and endangered species found on the slopes of Haleakalā volcano on Maui. Its rosette shape and adaptation to high-altitude environments make it a fascinating botanical specimen.

The Haleakalā silversword typically blooms once in its lifetime, and this event occurs after the plant has reached maturity, which usually takes several years. The blooming period generally happens between 3 to 90 years, with most plants flowering around 15 to 30 years old. The flowering event is triggered by environmental factors, and after blooming, the silversword produces seeds and dies. It’s a rare and remarkable spectacle to witness the flowering of these unique plants in their natural habitat on the slopes of Haleakalā in Hawaii.
