This page was created to show our fellow Clay County Kentucky citizens what outstanding historical sites are found in our very own mountains. The most significant of all is a natural cave just above the Red Bird river which is decorated with numerous ancient petroglyphs, languages from European travelers of old as well as Cherokee Indian syllabary. The reason for these petroglyphs being in and aro
und this particular cave is that it is a natural winter solstice alignment. Less than half a mile down stream from the cave was a cliff, covered in petroglyphs, which has since fallen off and been transported to the Rawling and Stinson Park in Manchester where it can be viewed at any time. Our city payed over $10,000 to have this piece of history removed and protected. If anyone has information on other petroglyph sites in or around Clay County we would love to hear from you. Please feel free to post any photos, questions or comments you may have. If calling from outside the USA, remember the time difference.
