The fight with your spouse, the anxiety, depression, addictions, isolation, numbing, emotional outbursts, shutdowns, fighting, bad behavior, digestion problems, high glucose levels, inability to get erections for men, vaginal dryness for women, the way you react by fighting, freezing, flighting or appeasing...

Emotions are your allies...

Allowing yourself to feel & experience intense emotions like anger, sadness & grief in safe places allows your nervous system to reset so you can come back into this present moment.

In order to survive we need to feel safe.

If we do not feel safe our brains, bodies & nervous systems are built to keep us safe at all costs.

Our autonomic nervous system makes sure our bodies are safe by making sure our body stays regulated; breath, blood, temperature, hormones & your fight/flight/freeze/appease sensor.

In 1/5 of a second your brain picks up cues & creates a bias as to whether something is safe or not. This happens before you even feel a sensation at about 1/3 of a second.

If your brain decides something is not safe you automatically (unconsciously) move into a fight/flight/freeze/appease state, just as your temperature increases, your palms sweat, breath & heart rate increases.

If you do not have the awareness to recognize when you, your clients, your partner, your kids, your boss or your team are in these states than you are being highjacked & a slave to your brain & body's survival mechanisms.

And because all of us humans have these same survival operating systems we are walking around hijacked by each others nervous systems because if one of us goes into survival it automatically reads as unsafe by our own brain/body & we react in a fight/flight/freeze/appease.

As a 12 year old I experienced mental, emotional, physical & sexual trauma.

The experience was so painful that I disassociated from it & forgot about it as well as the majority my memories from elementary school, middle school, high school & college.

It wasn't until I started leading my ERT retreats & holding space for other men to heal their past trauma that I remembered.

It first started like a cloudy picture.

I could not remember specific details.

However, this past year being deeply immersed in Gabor Mate's compassionate inquiry program, through my weekly somatic sessions I began to uncover more details.

At first I just felt numb.

However, as I began comfortable feeling & being with the numbness I realized the numbness was protecting me a rich history of pain & trauma.

Slowly week by week I allowed myself to feel what my body had been holding for me.

As I began to have the courage to be with myself.. I could share it with my mens groups (I am blessed to have my K4 tribe, my Brotherhood tribe & my Mancave tribe.)

This allowed me to embrace more of it until one day I recently remembered all of it.

As I did, I felt the anger, the hatred toward my violators as well as the hate I had towards myself for choosing to believe I deserved it.

I was able to use my forgiveness framework I do for the men in my retreats to forgive myself, forgive my violators & ask for forgiveness from myself from the years of self hatred. I wept in the gym as I did this process for an hour.

But, I finally feel free from the shackles of almost 30 years of pain.
