📖 Rider on the Orphan Train - History Comes Alive!
FREE - Saturday, July 23, 2pm, Sponsored by Humanities Texas.
Brought to you by the Marlin Public Library
Location: The Palace Theatre, Marlin

https://palacetheatremarlin.com/

The one-hour multi-media program combines live music by Phillip Lancaster and Alison Moore, a video montage with archival photographs and interviews of survivors, and a dramatic reading of the 2012 novel “Riders on the Orphan Train” by award-winning author Alison Moore. Although the program is about children, it is designed to engage audiences of all ages and to inform, inspire and raise awareness about this little-known part of history.

Few people today know much about the largest child migration in history. Between 1854 and 1929 over 250,000 orphans and unwanted children were taken out of New York City and given away at train stations across America. Children were sent to every state in the continental United States; the last train went to Sulphur Springs, Texas in 1929. This “placing out” system was originally organized by Methodist minister Charles Loring Brace and the Children’s Aid Society of New York. His mission was to rid the streets and overcrowded orphanages of homeless children and provide them with an opportunity to find new homes. Many of the children were not orphans but “surrendered” by parents too impoverished to keep them. The New York Foundling Hospital, a Catholic organization, also sent out children to be placed in Catholic homes. This seventy-six-year experiment in child relocation is filled with the entire spectrum of human emotion and reveals a great deal about the successes and failures of the American Dream.

Due to the amount of traffic anticipated for today's Marlin Fest, Willis Street will be one-way this evening from 4 p.m. until the event's end. Exit from the FCYFP area will be along Park Road. Park Road can accommodate typical commuter vehicles, but due to low trees and narrow pathing no trailers, monster trucks, or food truck/RVs can traverse that way. Be mindful of your mode of travel. Please consider walking or biking if you live nearby.

Royce Montgomery and the Motor City Band blew the roof off the the this weekend. There was swinging and dancing, grooving and moving, the sax player worked himself into a tizzy, and even a guest appearance by the ghost of "His Royal Badness" - Prince (The Palace is haunted, and they host Paranormal University there, so...). You missed a killer show if you weren't there. We're pretty sure they will be coming back around!

Also, don't be a hound dog! Make sure you get your tickets for the upcoming Elvis Tribute on August 13th! It's gonna be a leg shaker.

President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863 began the process of freeing enslaved people in the United States, but it wasn't until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment on December 18, 1865 that all people within the land were liberated from their bonds.

However, due to Texas' remoteness during that time, it took Federal troops two years to reach Galveston, Texas to enforce the decree. General Order No. 3 transmitted the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to the residents of the U.S. state of Texas and freed all remaining enslaved people in the state. The general order was issued by Union general Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, upon arriving at Galveston, Texas, at the end of the American Civil War and two years after the original issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. The announcement and Granger's enforcement of the order is the central event commemorated by the holiday of Juneteenth, which originally celebrated the end of slavery in Texas. In some circles it's believed that Marlin held the largest celebration outside of Galveston in 1865.

"Head Quarters District of Texas

Galveston Texas June 19th 1865.

General Orders
No. 3.

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.

The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.

By order of Major General Granger

F.W. Emery

Major A.A. Genl."

🎉 We invite you to join us in Marlin on June 18th, as we will celebrate the delivery of that good news by holding a city-wide parade, a presentation and reading at the Booker T. Washington Event Center, followed by food, fun, and family.
