Be careful out there folks! Mike Iaconelli drives a boat more often in a year than most will drive one in a lifetime and still ended up high and dry after hitting a hidden obstacle in the river. Glad everyone was ok.

Whoops! Mike Iaconelli was running and hit something, then lost control. (He and his Marshal are OK.) We'll see about the boat and motor! More photos here: http://www.bassmaster.com/blogs/2013-sabine-river-challenge-live-blog/ike-loses-control

Pic-A-Lure sponsored Angler Logan Thomas won the Trigg county High school open with 20.13lbs and won big bass with a 7.07lb giant ky lake largemouth! Even though he had a few plans that got foiled, he made the right adjustments to catch a good sack of fish. His fish were caught deep and shallow. The 7.07lb fish was caught in a school that was 22-25ft deep. The rest of the fish moved shallow around riprap break walls where he caught them flipping a jig. Seasonal Patterns - Brought to you by FLW Pro, Micah Frazier Fishing.

PRE SPAWN

The pre spawn pattern is either already happening in your area or is coming soon. Once the water temperature in your area reaches the mid to upper 50's, most of the bass will be located adjacent to and within spawning areas. A good spawning location to me, is a large shallow flat area in 1 to 10 feet of water, depending on your lake. Then, I narrow it down further by choosing flats that are near deeper water with structure. Some of the best deep water structure is creek bends or areas that have points dropping into them. Once you have located some flats near the deep water with structure, you are in a good pre spawn area. This time of year the bass will be back and forth between the flats, points and channels. During the mornings, the bass will usually be suspended and staging over the deeper water structure. As the day (water) warms up, the bass will move to the shallower flats and cruise for good bedding areas. Towards the evening and during the night they usually return and stage over the deeper water stucture until the water warms up again. That is usually the movement pattern for pre spawn bass.
Use a crankbait or a spinnerbait (something that covers water fast) to locate the bass. During pre spawn, the bass can be very aggressive, as they stock up on food in order to get them through the period of fasting that occurs during active spawning. When you catch a bass, there will nearly always be others in the area, and they can be caught on a variety of lures. The best lure types and colors for any given day during pre spawn, will depend largely on variables such as water clarity and weather. Once you get to the lake, the Pic-A-Lure ( www.picalure.com ) chart is a great way to select the best lures and colors for that day’s conditions.

I will post tips for six seasonal patterns this year. Pre Spawn, Spawn, Post Spawn, Summer, Winter and Fall. So stay tuned to Pic-A-Lure’s page, as I post these tips at the appropriate times throughout the year.

Tomorrow begins the FLW Tour tournament season. Lake Okeechobee is the site of this 4 day tournament and it will take between 20 lbs. and 25 lbs. a day to bring home the win. Our pro staff member Micah Frazier is fishing this tournament as well as all of the FLW Tour events this year.

Pic-A-Lure will be giving it's best guess at the winning pattern for each event based on the local conditions.

Because of the lack of "winter", the bass will most likely be scattered into all areas of the lake affording anglers the opportunity to catch them using may different techniques. The winner of this tournament is likely to do so by moving around a bit. Now, when I say moving around a bit, I mean 1/4 mile stretch or so. However, all over the lake is good, so what 1/4 mile stretch? This is anybody's guess. Our bet is that the winning angler will find his fish in an area where he can fish isolated targets like outside grass lines. Flipping and pitching to these targets will be a great way to weigh in a winning weight. Good luck, Micah!

February is coming. Are you ready?
When the weather starts to warm-up, and the sun begins shine, the water surface temperature increases by a few degrees. As light penetrates the surface, many times you will find the warmest water on rocky points and sandy bottoms. There is some good fishing to be had if you methodically explore this structure in the month of February. Use a lipless crankbait worked slowly (braided line is a key here) to help locate fish. If you catch a couple and the bite slows down, try pitching a jig or dragging a 6” shaky head worm across the points. This is a solid technique for slower lethargic fish that are starting to warm up a bit.
Most good anglers would agree that a long sloping point (with structure) dumping into a creek channel, is one of the most-productive areas to catch bass in the month or so leading up to pre spawn.
