The difficult decision was made last night (Wednesday Jan 24th) to turn around machines and discontinue grooming operations for the evening. We were doing more damage than good, the weather is not in our favor and the snow conditions have deteriorated. We will share another update this evening when we will again try to groom and assess the situation. We want to be out there as much as you want to ride, but we cannot control Mother Nature.

Reclining on the shores of the Manistique River in Germfask Michigan, Benny the Beard Fisher is a wooden troll, created by artist Thomas Dambo, whose stature is around 30 feet long and 14 feet tall.

The giant troll’s head, hands, and feet were manufactured in Denmark and shipped to Germfask ahead of the artist’s arrival. The remainder of his body was assembled on-site in July 2023.

The cedar planks used to create this fantasy creature were recycled from a nearby Amish lumber mill, while branches and saplings were collected from nearby the installation site. The sculpture’s creator said that he takes pleasure in seeing the opportunity in what other people discard.

Visitors to the campground as well as those floating down the river are enthralled with the large wooden troll, sharing photos and videos to social media.

From a first timer who stayed and adventured the UP for the first time.

"imagine
the life of a poet...
hiking trails
as close to the
untamed wilderness
as any writer
could venture
backpack of beverages
encouraging you
no - egging you
closer to the edge
where sand dunes
often give way
under foot
just like the sign says
tranquility
sitting atop an
ancient rock formation
looking down
at the cool
blue
beauty of lake superior
and its new antagonist
blue-green algae
pondering
miles of multicolored
sandstone cliffs
unplugging
from the tall
buildings where
window gazing
uncovers passing motorists
and dollar generals
jumping
from said rock formation
standing 30 feet above
the nearest water
leaving troubles
that can't swim
or fear heights
absorbing
the melodic symphony of
picture-perfect waterfalls
descending a steep bank
of carved stones
so high up
you have to climb
an ungodly number of
man-made planks
and rails
climb over safety barriers
to get a better view
searching
for yooperlite rocks,
similar to granite
which glows a vibrant
orange or yellow
beneath ultraviolet lite,
along
wide sandy beaches
at sunset
returning
to a cabin in the woods
fire pit flanked by
red plastic chairs
requiring eye contact
with other humans
and forced to talk
shots
saluting "30 Years"
before retiring
and doing it all
again

It's been more than a month and a third since last posting. Summer did arrive! I’m unsure where to begin. Going back a month or working backwards. How bout beginning with Joseph, who was Jim Harrison's Poetry Editor. He has returned for a couple days and gifted us this wonderful set of Harrison's complete Works of Poetry.

Hike in groups. Bears like to have options.

Don’t we all? Your safety is your responsibility while hiking in national parks. Planning is an important step in being prepared for any adventure. Although it’s generally safer to hike with a companion, if you prefer to go solo, take a few extra measures, like leaving a trip plan with a trusted friend or family member.

If you’re hiking in bear country alone or with a group, making noise on the trail can alert a bear, or other wildlife, to your presence before you surprise it. Talk to your partners (keep it light, Carol) and occasionally sing loudly. Yell “hello!” You can add in “it's me” if you’re feelin’ it. You can also clap your hands (if you’re happy and you know it) to let any bears know you're coming through. Wow. That’s not even on a beat. Doesn’t matter. Moving on.

Bear pepper spray can be an important thing to carry when exploring the back country. It’s used defensively to stop an aggressive, charging, or attacking bear. Bear pepper spray and human pepper spray are not the same. Also, it’s not like bug spray or intended to spice up your campfire meal. That’s a spicy meatball. Always check park rules and regulations to see if bear pepper spray is recommended or allowed for the activities you have planned. In conclusion, have fun, be safe, and hike smart.
