One of the most common questions about mushrooms is whether or not humans can eat them. But the usefulness of fungi to their ecosystems goes far beyond their edibility. In many of her paintings, Baxter State Park's 2024 Visiting Artist, Jadyn LaDeau, explores the other features that make mushrooms fascinating and worthy of our attention. To capstone her residency at BSP, Jadyn will be hosting an open house of works she has completed during her time in the Park at the Kidney Pond Library on Saturday (9/28) and Sunday (9/29), including an informal painting demonstration and talk on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Visitors who would like a final chance to interact with the 2024 visiting artist and learn more about both fungi and painting are encouraged to stop by during their trip into the Park.

Happy Friday the 13th! The end of summer marks many important transitions in nature. Days grow cooler and shorter; leaves begin to change their colors; birds (and some bat species!) start their long journeys south to warmer climates. By mid-September, many bat species have already begun entering their hibernacula for the winter. But not the Big Brown Bat. These hardy, cold loving bats remain active into October and sometimes even as late as November, continuing to help us by devouring insects night after night. If your plans involve spending an evening in Baxter State Park and you want to learn more about these and the other bat species that call the Park home, join us for an educational evening program at the Kidney Pond Library tonight at 6:30 p.m.!

Reminder! The New England Outdoor Center - NEOC is raffling off a Whitewater Rafting Trip for TWO guests that includes lodging in a bunkhouse for two nights during the 2025 summer season - no restrictions on dates (valid until 9/25).
Tickets can be purchased NOW through tomorrow evening, 9/18 at 7:30pm via cash or card.

All raffle ticket proceeds will be donated directly to the family of Dominic Grant. Tickets are for sale at our Pizza Counter and Front Desk Counter inside of the Brewery.

Look Up in the Sky Tonight

We turned to our trusted Maine Farmer’s Almanac to understand what’s happening overhead tonight.

Tonight’s Harvest Moon is also a Corn Moon. It’s the full Moon that has long been essential for farmers, providing extra light to gather crops before the cold sets in. Cultures worldwide have honored this Moon for centuries. From the Chinese Moon Festival to the Cherokee “Nut Moon,” it marks the gathering of grains, fruits, and nuts that sustain us. It’s a reminder of the cycle of seasons and the importance of a fruitful harvest.

Add a partial lunar eclipse and clear skies, and we have the makings of a spectacular evening.
