All in a Days Work: Archaeology of the Manti-La Sal National Forest by Allison Aakre

The Manti-La Sal National Forest stretches across central and southeast Utah. The South Zone comprises the Moab and Monticello Ranger Districts with human occupation going back thousands of years. The evidence of human occupation is shown in archaeological sites which have been meticulously documented by agency personnel over the decades, mainly following the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Allison Aakre, archaeologist, will give a brief overview of the archaeology of the Moab and Monticello Ranger Districts, the history of management, and what it means to manage these incredible places today.

October 3 | Beyond the Visible Landscape: Geological Pattern and Process in the Colorado Plateau by Scott Ritter

The Colorado Plateau region of southern and southeastern Utah is home to five National Parks and numerous state parks and monuments. Also known as Utah’s Canyon Country, the striking scenery of the region continues to entice adventurers from far and near. Millions of visitors have captured billions of images of the region, and artists have rendered the cliffs and canyons in thousands of paintings. Indigenous peoples have lived in the land for millennia, etching their history into the very bedrock that once sheltered them. Each visitor sees the landscape a bit differently. In this presentation, Dr. Ritter will share his experiences conducting geological research in the region, focusing on ways to ascribe geological process to the myriad geological patterns that characterize Canyon Country. Dr. Ritter will invite attendees to see beyond the visible landscape by understanding the geological processes that have conspired over hundreds of million years to create this scenic wonderland.
