Master Gardener Tip of the Week: Native plants help native pollinators in the Willamette Valley

OSU researchers spent three years researching which native plants would be perfect for native pollinators in a low-maintenance garden in the Willamette Valley. Out of 19 native plants, researchers narrowed the list to 10 picks that attracted an abundance of wild bees, many different kinds of bees, and have unique associations with wild bee species, meaning that some bees were attracted to specific plant species. You can review the Native Plant Picks for Bees here: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/pub/em-9363

The Xerces Society publishes a more extensive list of native plants for pollinators and beneficial insects in the Pacific Northwest: https://xerces.org/publications/plant-lists/native-plants-for-pollinators-and-beneficial-insects-inland-northwest

COMMUNITIES REMEMBER THE GRANITE MOUNTAIN HOTSHOTS
Ninth Anniversary

PRESCOTT, AZ (June 20, 2022) –On June 30, 2013 at 4:42 p.m., 19 members of the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew gave their lives battling the Yarnell Hill Fire. Nine years later, the City of Prescott and other agencies continue to remember the brave 19 with public tributes. This year marks the ninth anniversary of the tragedy.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 29

The Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew Learning and Tribute Center will mark its Fourth anniversary by hosting the Central Arizona Pipes and Drums, who will pay tribute to the Hotshots with their music. The program begins at 12:30 p.m., with comments by Prescott Mayor Phil Goode and other dignitaries, followed by the pipe and drum tribute.

The Center will be open daily from open June 29 through July 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except Saturday July 2 they will be open 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. because of the Frontier Days Parade). The Center is located at Prescott Gateway Mall, 3280 Gateway Boulevard in Prescott. For more information about the Center, go to gmihc19.org.

THURSDAY JUNE 30

The Yavapai County Courthouse in downtown Prescott will ring the bells 19 times, beginning at 4:42 p.m. This will be a silent moment of reflection. No public comments are planned. To hear the bells clearly, stand on the south side of the Courthouse.

IN YARNELL, ARIZONA:

The ninth anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire will be remembered at the Yarnell Hill Fire Memorial Park 22556 South State Route 89, Yarnell, AZ (Corner of Shrine Road and SR 89).

In addition to local musicians lending their voices to the program, there will be a reading of the names of the fallen Hotshot and a closing moment of silent tribute to the Hotshots. This year’s remembrance begins at 4 p.m., and concludes with ringing of the bells at 4:42 p.m.

IN CASE OF RAIN: The program will be held at the Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church, 16455 Tabletop Way, Yarnell, AZ 85362.

Incredible work by the CA’s own Bill & Merry Nebeker CA] Repost from

One of the top sculptors in Arizona, Bill Nebeker, has a major new work on public view in his hometown of Prescott, Arizona. The city is now the proud owner of a 5,000-pound, 14-foot-high version of his bronze If Horses Could Talk. The work itself offers a humorous take of a hunter who is being outwitted by a deer. “Bill has been a hunter since he was a boy with his father, then with his friends for 50 years and now continues today with his son and grandsons,” according to a release about the artwork.”
