I wanted to talk about something I’ve been seeing more and more of lately—balloon releases. I know they’re often done to celebrate a big moment or honor someone special, and I understand the sentiment behind it. But as someone who’s dedicated to protecting the land and wildlife here in North Louisiana, I have to tell you—they’re doing a lot more harm than good.
When balloons go up, they don’t just disappear. Eventually, they come back down, and more often than not, they end up littering our forests, fields, and waterways. Wildlife—like birds, turtles, and even deer—can get tangled in the strings or eat pieces of the balloons, mistaking them for food. This can lead to injuries or even death. And let’s not forget, balloons are made of plastic, which takes decades to break down and only adds to the pollution in our beautiful state.
This isn’t limited to balloons, it’s all garbage. Think about when you throw trash outside your vehicle window.
Here at Briarwood, we’re all about preserving and protecting Louisiana’s natural beauty, and it’s heartbreaking to see something like a balloon disrupt the balance of our ecosystems. But there’s good news—we can celebrate and honor those special moments in ways that help the environment instead of hurting it!
Think about planting a native tree, scattering wildflower seeds, or lighting candles for a quiet moment of reflection. These are meaningful and lasting ways to celebrate while giving back to the land we all love.
We’re lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world, and it’s up to us to take care of it. I know we can count on our community to help keep Louisiana wild and wonderful for generations to come.
Thanks, y’all, for loving this place as much as I do!
