Why are those dunes so tall?
The Grand Sable Dunes are one of the few examples of a perched dune system in the entire world! Some of the only other places you can find perched dunes are Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and in Denmark!
"Perched" dunes form following very specific geologic processes. Glaciers leave behind large bluffs of rocks, sand, and other debris, hundreds of feet high. Then, a body of water - such as Lake Superior - erode the debris through wave action. This creates even more sand, which is blown on top of the bluffs, eventually creating dunes!
The Grand Sable Dunes are home to a unique, dynamic environment. Open dunes, grassy areas, forests, and even small wetlands can be found in the miles of dunelands. Many species found in the dunes are seldom found elsewhere in the park. Learn more about the Grand Sable Dunes here: https://www.nps.gov/piro/learn/nature/grand-sable-dunes.htm
