The hieroglyphic sign “Mes” (𓁋), which represents birth in the ancient Egyptian language, is depicted in the texts of the Dendera Temple. Notice the shape of the seated woman giving birth, with the infant visible below her. Beneath the baby, there is a wave of water, symbolizing the idea of being in a birthing pool, similar to a swimming bath.

“The First Ahmose”

Ahmose the First, as historians have noted, is considered the founder of the modern state and one of Egypt’s greatest rulers. He played a pivotal role in the liberation of Egypt, leading the expulsion of the Hyksos after a three-year siege of their capital, Avaris. Beyond clearing the country of invaders, he pursued them into Palestine, completely dispersing their unity.

Heading south, Ahmose confronted the influence of the Nubian tribes settled in the Nubian lands, successfully restoring security and tranquility. His rule over Egypt lasted nearly twenty-five years, during which he cleared foreign rule remnants, reformed the system, repaired temples, and encouraged military service, establishing a foundation for the army.

Under his leadership, the army breached borders, swiftly dealing with neighboring nations, ensuring freedom from foreign colonization attempts. Despite being the last king of the 17th dynasty, Ahmose marked a new era, as Manetho placed him at the helm of the 18th dynasty.

Ahmose I prioritized the legitimate royal lineage, introducing the title “Divine Wife of Amun” for the king’s wife and mother of his children, holding a sacred role in the temple. This practice designated the heir as the son of the princess, simultaneously the son of the king and the Divine Wife of Amun. Queen Ahmose Nefertari, sister-wife to King Ahmose and mother of King Amenhotep I, was the first to bear this title.

Exploiting a new quarry in Tura, Ahmose extracted limestone to build various temples for the goddess in Heliopolis and Luxor’s Abidos.

An inscription dating to the second year of his reign indicates Ahmose’s dedication to temple construction to appease the deities and those in their service.

To this day, his tomb remains undiscovered, with the prevailing belief that he constructed it in the Dira Abu al-Naja region in the western desert near the ancestors of the 17th dynasty kings, preserving his memory after death.

The mural from the Temple of Abu Simbel depicts King Ramesses II during a battle, with a lion running alongside the war chariot.

Did the ancient Egyptians succeed in taming and training lions for combat?

How do lions distinguish between friend and foe? It seems evident from the scene that the lion wasn’t at the forefront of the army but rather in the midst of it, as there is an Egyptian soldier in front, all facing in one direction.

Are lions trained to protect the king only if an enemy approaches during battle?

Many questions and mysteries from one of the greatest civilizations in history.
