Did you know that many Hobos in the early 1900's actually went to College? They sure did! Hobo Colleges were established at major hubs by James Eads How where migrant workers could partake in lectures and have a place to stay over the harsh winters!

Did you know that Hobos used their own hieroglyphic language to pass information to one another? These symbols were a quick way to convey information to each other and since most of the Hobos of the day could not read they were an important way to warn of danger or possibly where to get a good meal!

We often think of Hobos as individuals who either couldn't maintain a job or were on the run from responsibilities. In fact many of these individuals had simply fallen on hard times after the Civil War, Dust Bowl, and well into the area of The Great Depression. Westward expansions of the railroad gave them the opportunity to work across the country and "flip freight" or hop trains as they went searching for work. In this way the hobo manifests the American Spirit to not only endure times of great difficulty, but to thrive through them.

At The Hobo Hideaway it is our goal to share this forgotten time with our guests as well as the challenges and triumphs of the men and women that called it home.
