The big crane that will be used to build the wheel is now erected on our site. It will first lift and install the 300 foot-tall legs into place. When completed, the wheel will be just about double the height of this crane!

St. George, at the northern tip of Staten Island, is in the midst of a $1.2 billion redevelopment effort. At the center of this transformation is the New York Wheel. The New York Wheel will be the world’s largest observation wheel, at 630 feet, when launched in 2018.

Pieces of one of the largest cranes in the world arrived on-site this week to help build the wheel. Once assembled, it will be 460 ft – that’s taller than the London Eye! Can’t wait to see it in action.

"The cranes are critically important to phase two of construction, which is where we are right now. Phase two is erecting the legs, A-frame, spindle and hub," said Rich Marin, NY Wheel CEO.

A large crane weighing about 400 tons will help put the pieces of the NY Wheel together.
