My good friend Ruben Carrillo is one of the most highly accomplished figures in Hawaii's film industry, with a career spanning over three decades. I was lucky enough to work with him about 10 years ago, on and off for about 6 months, on a show called "Hawaii House Hunters." We also got the chance to work on a show called "Maui Water Rescue." He's been a camera operator for popular shows like Hawaii 5-0, Magnum PI, MacGyver, and Amazing Race. Rubin has also worked on feature films such as "Kong Vs. Godzilla" and "Finding Ohana" (Netflix).
While I was on a "Mini VaCa/Work Trip" in the midwest 3 weeks ago, I got a call from his partner that they needed help producing a season of the hit TV cooking show, "Cooking Hawaiian Style." I cut my trip short and myself and Kawika Hoke did everything we could to make sure things went smoothly for the entire cast and crew. Besides the great pleasure of meeting and working shoulder-to-shoulder with his team, I got to connect (for an entire week) with host Lanai Tabura.
Not only learning all the finer points of what it takes to build a show like this, I was able to brainstorm ideas with everyone above the line and also get valuable feedback on our team's efforts on "MOKU MOKU."
Thanks again, Rubin and Lanai! Looking forward to seeing you again in 2025!

MOKU MOKU represents an effort on behalf of our Maui Hawaii community to create a self sustaining economic engine to fill the hole in our economy that was left by the Maui fires.
Our first season can now be viewed on the Tubi streaming platform and will soon premiere season one on Hawaii’s statewide CBS network affiliate KGHB Channel 5.
We plan to start shooting season two with new cast, new storylines, and a continued promise to represent authentic Island life as it's never been seen before.

We are thrilled to announce that Moku Moku is holding a virtual casting call for Season 2. If you have a passion for acting, this is your chance to shine!

Roles Needed:

Older Children (8-12 years): Theatre experience & athleticism is a bonus.

Young Adults (19-25 years): Local kids, social media influencers, athleticism is a bonus.

Adults (26-40 years): Locals in MLMs, friends at church/work, influencers, political, athleticism is a bonus.

Middle-Aged Adults (41-60 years): Locals in MLMs, friends at church/work, political, Uncles & Aunties, Comic Con Uncles, Craft Fair Aunties.

Kupuna (60+ years): Friends at church/work, political, Craft Fair Kupuna, Tasty Crust or Sheik’s regulars.

One of the great things about working on a project like Moku Moku, is that it not only reminds me how blessed I am to live in one of the most incredible states on the face of the planet, but I'm also privileged to be a part of a team that is so extremely talented, the world has only seen us scratch the surface of what's possible. Of course, it's fantastic to be a part of an interview, a podcast, or a feature The Maui News story about the small part you play in making this happen, yet I always do them knowing that I would not have the opportunity to talk about the project if it weren't for the combined efforts of all of us WORKING TOGETHER! It takes a TEAM of us working hard every week.
Those of us working behind the scenes have not had a day off since we began this process years ago..... and we feel as if we're just getting started because it's true.... We have a lot more work to do.
Thank you so much to everyone for your continued support as we continue to create something original, authentic, and that speaks to the truth of what it is to live in our state beyond the complex problems we all face on the heels of one of the worst natural fire disasters in history.

One of the best Friday memories I have of my Dad was the time he took me fishing instead of school and he told me hours of funny stories of all the trouble he used to get into when he and Joe Namath played ball together. The BEST story was when he, Joe, and Flip Wilson went to Joe's tailor in NYC to buy a new fur coat!
