🗳️ Movie Night Spotlight: WINNER, directed by Susanna Fogel.
“Winner” is based on the true story of Reality Winner, a brilliant young misfit from Texas who finds her morals challenged while serving in the US Air Force and the NSA.
She eventually blew the whistle on the NSA, revealing to the public that the U.S. government knew there was Russian interference in the 2016 election. 🇺🇸
Winner’s actions landed her in prison, where she was faced with extreme punishment because, according to her, the government sought to make an example out of her.
It had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and was released on September 13, 2024, by Vertical Entertainment.

Meet Brooke Taylor. 👋🏻
Brooke grew up in rural Missouri with “farm fields to the left, churches to the right.” She doesn’t fit neatly into a box; saying she has socially liberal views, despite the conservative community that surrounds her. Social and outgoing, she develops a close friendship with Nisha Murali.
👩🏼⚖️ After winning a seat on the Supreme Court, Taylor and her fellow jurists are tasked with deciding an abortion case that turns on the issue of privacy. It is an empowering yet bittersweet experience wielding The Court’s power to make decisions about reproductive rights that extend only to Girls State.
Within weeks of their ruling, Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dobbs Decision. 🎓 Taylor is now a student at the University of Missouri.
💚 Thanks for the love, Katie Stebbins!

Meet Nisha Murali. 👋🏽
Nisha is a hyper-informed, hardworking policy wonk who cares deeply about criminal justice reform. ⚖️ At Girls State, Murali pursues a position on the Supreme Court and looks forward to debating abortion rights.
She suffers a crushing defeat and reflects that, like so many other female leaders, it’s “exhausting” presenting an image to the world and being rejected. 🏛️ Nisha pivots to a position on a lower court, where she makes a key ruling on an abortion case.
She forges a surprising friendship with Brooke Taylor during the Supreme Court contest, when both girls are pitted against each other for a single seat. 🎓Murali attends Texas A&M University and is planning to follow Elle Woods’ career path and become a lawyer.
