Caught from the top of the Tower...

"Fun fact many years ago I climbed the tower, leaving my 'height fearing' husband on the ground below. From the top of the tower, I could see him sitting outside a cafe, enjoying a beer...also smoking a cigarette which, he had assured me, he had given up about 6 months previously. Caught from the top of the tower! He has never smoked since (to my knowledge)."

Tuscany's only DOCG white wine can be found in San Gimignano.

Have you heard of the Vernaccia di San Gimignano?

There are two types of Vernaccia di San Gimignano: first, the Riserva, made from selected grapes Vernaccia di San Gimignano processed over a long period. The second is Vernaccia di San Gimignano d'Annata, with a fresher taste that is immediately ready for tasting. Yet it is best to experience these wines in person, so why not book a wine-tasting experience at Rocca di Montestaffoli?

Once you've explored the iconic towers, be sure to take in the magic of San Gimignano’s cathedral - undoubtedly the second most significant monument!

Situated in the Piazza del Duomo since the 12th century, the cathedral's interior follows a traditional basilica plan, marked by the 14 classic Tuscan stone columns. Yet the main attraction is the magnificent frescoes lining the cathedral walls, depicting stories of the New and Old Testament and colourful decorations typical of the medieval period. It is also possible to admire a jewel of the Renaissance, the Chapel of Santa Fina, where three artists worked together to create the masterpiece dedicated to San Gimignano's most beloved saint.

We spoke to students at Pisa University and uncovered some fascinating superstitions believed to ensure success in their degrees. Take a peek at these intriguing rituals:

🚫 Avoid the Tower Climb: While studying in the city, the famous tower is strictly off-limits! It's said that success in your studies is jeopardised if you attempt the climb.

🤫 Silence in the Archway: Hold your words! Students must maintain silence when passing through the Palazzo dell’Orologio archway if they hope to secure their graduation.

🚶‍♂️ Bypass Porta Santa Maria: Entering the Piazza dei Miracoli comes with a twist - students must avoid the Porta Santa Maria archway and opt for the two smaller archways for a shot at academic triumph.

These may be mere superstitions, but when it comes to securing that degree, who wouldn't want to play it safe?

If you've been to Tuscany before, you have probably visited Pisa and its famous Leaning Tower. You may even have the "I'm holding it up" photos to prove it.

But you would be excused for thinking that there isn't much more to the city than its tilted monument. After all, it's the main talking point in all the guidebooks.

We're here to share the best ways to enjoy Pisa, beyond the tower, hear below directly from our team.

''My favorite thing is that in less than 15 minutes you can go from the hustle and bustle of a city to the tranquillity of Tenuta di San Rossore, surrounded by peaceful nature. The visitor center at the park offers delightful options like horseback rides, a charming carriage ride, a charming train tour, and an enchanting boat trip to the heart of Pisa. My favorite activity is undoubtedly walking along the many paths that the park offers'' - Valentina

''There's so much to do in Pisa and part of the fun is getting around and taking it all in. And there's plenty of different ways to do so - from walking and cycling to even carriage rides and boat trips..'' - Michaela

''I recommend visiting Pisa in June! During Giugno Pisano, the city comes alive with historical events such as the Luminara, the Palio di San Ranieri, the Gioco del Ponte, and the captivating Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics.'' - Lauren

''For some of the best views across Pisa, a walk along the city walls is a must!'' - Sean

Have you got a driving in Tuscany story?

We'll share a few of ours below...

"We were excited to pick up our rental car for our first trip to Tuscany...a Fiat Panda. After all, everyone had told us you have to experience Italy in a Panda. Off we go, out of the airport, cruising happily along the motorway. We then come off and start heading into the Chianti, taking in the amazing scenery. But as first-timers to the region, we hadn't planned our route to our accommodation as well as we could have done and started to ascend a very steep white road. Needless to say, the Panda struggled and we decided in the end the best course of action was for me to get out and let my husband drive, whilst I walked. And that was before a week of indulging on pasta, pizza and wine!"

"On a recent trip to Tuscany, our flight had been delayed for several hours, meaning that we didn't pick up our hire car until after midnight. We contemplated spending a night in Florence rather than heading straight to our accommodation but we both felt awake and just wanted to get to our destination, especially knowing we could then just relax by the pool all day tomorrow. Of course, an hour in and we were starting to wilt, especially along the windy, dark, country roads. However, we had the best wake up call...a family of wild boar (complete with tiny babies) and then deer playing in front of us before crossing the road into the woodland."

Our team are experienced when it comes to driving both to Italy and within Tuscany.
Here are our top tips to make the most of the adventure:

- Take your time – Tuscany is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Savour every moment of the journey and let yourself fully appreciate the beauty around you.
- Plan your route – A little preparation goes a long way. Some routes are unsuitable for lower and smaller vehicles, so make sure to choose the best roads for your car. This will help you avoid any unnecessary detours or challenges.
- Take in your beautiful surroundings – The Tuscan landscapes are breath-taking. Allow for stops along the way to fully enjoy the rolling hills, vineyards, and charming villages.
- Stick to the speed limit – It's important for your safety and to avoid potentially hefty speeding fines. Driving within the limit also gives you more time to take in the stunning views.
- Carry spare change for tolls – This will make it much easier and quicker to pass through the toll barriers. Having a few coins ready can save you time and hassle.
- Watch out for the wild boars and other wildlife – These animals can be unpredictable, especially when they are protecting their young. Stay alert and drive cautiously in areas where wildlife is common.
- Drive on the famous Strade Bianche – These iconic white gravel roads offer a unique driving experience and a glimpse into the historic routes of Tuscany. They are a must-try for any road trip enthusiast.
