As we enter February, we join the nation in recognizing Black History Month, a time to honor and celebrate the contributions, achievements, and history of Black Americans. The observance of Black History Month began in 1926 as "Negro History Week" created by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a historian and scholar who believed that acknowledging the achievements of Black individuals would enrich the understanding of American history as a whole.
In 1976, the week expanded to a full month, marking a significant step toward more inclusive recognition. Since then, February has been an opportunity to highlight the pivotal roles that Black individuals have played in shaping society across various fields, including the arts, science, politics, and civil rights.
Black History Month serves as a reminder that the story of Black Americans is integral to the story of the United States. It encourages us to reflect on the past, acknowledge progress, and continue working towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
At Bremer Whyte Brown & O’Meara, we believe in the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This month and every month, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and creativity of Black communities, both past and present. Together, let’s continue to learn, grow, and inspire one another.
