Whales in Oregon!

People come from all over the world to learn about the Gray whales that travel along the Oregon coast each year. Whales are visible from Oregon's shores all year long although some months are better than others.

In the Winter we watch nearly 25,000 gray whales from mid-December through mid-January as they travel south to the warm lagoons of Baja Mexico.

Spring watching begins in late March as the gray whales travel north on their way towards Alaska. The first surge swims past Oregon around the end of March, and we watch the north-bound whales all the way until June.

Summer and Fall bring Oregon's resident Gray whales close to shore to feed. These are the approximately 200 whales that remain in Oregon's coastal waters during the summer migration. The central coast in particular is a hot-spot for whales from June to mid-November.

Year-round park staff are ready to answer your questions and help you spot Gray whales at the Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay. Perched on the seawall, the center provides expansive ocean views and educational displays about whales and marine life.

Bad weather makes good training

The crew aboard a 47-foot motor lifeboat from U.S. Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay took a moment to ponder the wave-pounded entrance to “The World’s Smallest Harbor,” a 100-foot shaft through lava rock nicknamed “The Hole.”

Bad weather makes for good training, according to station personnel who claim the entire Oregon coast is a very challenging area for small boat search-and-rescue operators.

The 28-member unit based in Depoe Bay averages about 60-70 cases a year, a fast pace that includes routine tows to desperate rescues in stormy, nighttime conditions.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter plucked an injured man from Yaquina Bay’s south jetty Sunday after a wave crashed him up onto the rocks.

Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Yaquina Bay was on the scene when fire and medical personnel arrived.

They found an injured man about halfway up the north side of the south jetty, and determined that a helicopter would be the best means of rescue due to the difficulty in traversing the jetty rocks with a stretcher in tow. Waves can also crash across the jetty even during relatively calm seas.

Stranded sea turtles get another chance!

A stranded sea turtle’s prognosis is always guarded. As marine reptiles, sea turtles rely on their surroundings for warmth.

When these animals get caught in Oregon’s cold waters, they experience cold stunning, rendering them incapable of eating or navigating.

Turtles can float in a cold-stunned state for weeks, and often sustain physical injury, infection and dehydration before washing ashore.

Cold currents and storms can act as catalysts for sea turtle strandings, so frequency increases during the fall and winter months.

The turtles were transported to the aquarium for initial care, then on to Seaward where they will continue to recuperate until they can be released into the wild.

Aquarium officials said the Olive Ridley sea turtle is an endangered species, making Pumpkin and Joanie’s survival even more crucial.
