I recently illustrated a couple of mascots for a company that sells boat parts through a store on ebay. The company, Salvage Marine Network, has established branding that includes a pirate skull and cap, which I added to the parrot's pirate hats. The parrots, Sully and Sandy, will be used as characters in a campaign announcing promotions for the store. Salvage Marine ☠️

Logo design for the North Attleboro High School Cross Country team. Initially I designed artwork to use on a tent for the XC team. I based the design on the NAHS "N" with a banner displaying a flying runners foot symbol. Since the tent will be used for both XC and T&F I listed "Big Red" in the banner. It was exciting to see the tent recently at the championship race and know it will be used for years to come.

After the girls XC team won their division this season, I designed a decal for sweatshirts based on the artwork I'd created for the tent, adding additional information related to the teams' divisional title.

Logo design for the North Attleborough Historical Commission. I began by creating an illustration of the Holmes Schoolhouse, built around 1850, which is the only one-room schoolhouse owned by the town that has remained unaltered since its closing in 1951. The school is currently being restored and will continue being enjoyed as a museum. The Historical Commission needed a line drawing created to use on a variety of materials to promote the work of the Historical Commission. The logo for the Commission uses a script font called SignPainter which was inspired by vintage hand-painted advertising signage. A version of Bodoni is used for the banner under the school illustration. The colors are based on the actual colors of the building itself with a prominent use of red since the color reflects the town of North Attleborough, otherwise known as Big Red Country.

Invitation design for Sisters@Heart's annual Hoe Down fundraiser! I kept the same feel to the design as I did for the Save the Date. I used a neutral color scheme using a couple of simple Western-themed photos (cowboy boots and a cowboy hat). I grabbed colors from the photos to use in the text and graphic elements. I then enclosed the images within a Western-style border. I added the title of the event within a rectangle shape in the center with a silhouette of a bull horns to replicate a wooden sign you'd find in an Old West saloon. Finally I added a gradient of black at the bottom to make the text pop. With so much information on the invitation it was important to not allow the large photographs in the background to compete with the text.

don't often get opportunities to illustrate for clients. Though I do often include illustration in logo designs. I love illustration. It reminds me of my childhood. I was always sketching or drawing something. I wish I had the time to just sketch. I miss those days. It was a time when I could forget about time. Drawing has always helped me do that. It's a bit different on a computer versus with pencil and paper, but it's still my favorite thing to do as an artist.Check out my illustration portfolio on my website at erinsweeneydesign.com/portfolio-item/illustration.

Save the Date social media post design for SistersatHeart. I've been designing flyers for their annual Hoedown for Hearts since 2018 (with the exception of last year when Kaitlyn Deck was the designer :)). I've tried to change up the design each year to keep it interesting. I've used a lot of illustration in the past. This year I decided to keep it a neutral color scheme using a simple photo. I grabbed the colors from the photo to use in the text and graphic elements. I then placed a Western-style border I found on an old "Wanted" poster around the content of the design. I'll be designing the invitation shortly and will base that design on this Save the Date post.

Logo design for North East Weathered Services. The client wanted a logo that would represent both their landscaping business as well as their snow removal business. They wanted a simple design that wasn't overly detailed or confusing. The graphic is a simplified combination of sun and snow. The yellow of the sunshine contrasts nicely with the blues of the business name which represent the coolness of snow/winter.

Flyer design for Tasty's announcing their Easter dessert specials. I've created a number of flyers for Tasty's over the years using the same format: a brick design behind the logo and heading with relevant images serving as a border in the background and text centered on an overlay. For this one I decided to do something a bit more whimsical and fun so I removed the brick layer, then added an adorable bunny and a bunch of sunny yellow daffodils.

Be sure to place your order by April 3rd!

Website design for the North Attleboro High School Girls Basketball Team. I wanted the homepage to be about the athletes with a collage of action shots representing Varsity, JV, and Freshmen, as well as a list of the 3 rosters in the footer. The site includes the schedule with updated scores and a blog called Game Day which breaks down various games and includes some galleries. There is also a Sponsors page so area businesses and organizations can show their support for the program by purchasing an "ad" space for the year. In addition, the site includes a Fundraising & Events page. The main purpose of the website was to promote the team while offering an opportunity to fundraise through the website. Still working out those issues but, otherwise, the site is up and ready to go. Good luck on the rest of the season, girls! Go Big Red!! Visit nahsgirlsbball.org.

Is this the real face of Jesus? Artist Bas Uterwijk created this photorealistic depiction of Jesus based on forensic anthropology, archaeology, and historical texts. Though Jesus is often portrayed as a light-skinned man with long hair and a beard, His actual face was probably very different. Many of the representations created by various artists over the years look nothing like an average first-century Jewish man from Judea. As we've seen, the portrayal of Jesus has changed quite a bit throughout the centuries, as early artists were more concerned about symbolism over accuracy. As seen in paintings dated after 400 AD, Christian artists around the world began depicting Jesus in their own image. It was European artists who imagined Jesus as a fair-skinned man with European characteristics. As European colonialism spread, so did the European version of Jesus. But according to most scientists and anthropologists, this is not what Jesus really looked like.

In 2018, Joan Taylor, a professor of early Christianity and Second Temple Judaism at King’s College London, published a historical study into Christ’s appearance called "What Did Jesus Look Like?" Based on archaeological sources, Taylor claimed Jesus was probably around 5’5″ tall which was the average height seen in male skeletons from that time. Most likely Jesus had dark hair, tan skin, and brown eyes like men from that time from Judea and Egypt did. He probably wore a woolen tunic with a cloak and sandals. He would have been recognized as someone very poor. In addition, He likely had a lean, muscular build from His work as a carpenter and from all of the walking that He did. With all this in mind, He was certainly not a man living a soft life as what most of the portrayals of Jesus have shown us.

We will probably never know exactly what Jesus looked like. But we're more likely to get a better idea by looking at forensic anthropology, archaeology, and historical texts rather than at any artistic interpretations.

Logo design for Hydrangea Family Medicine. The bent hydrangea flower adds motion to the horizontal text. A faded circle shape encloses the flower while keeping it connected to the text. The color choices were from the client. She asked for petals that went from purple to blue. I offered a variety of combinations, however she felt the boldness of this combination struck her.

One-page website design for greenlawnsmass.com. Green Lawns is a service one of my long-time clients (Reilly Tree and Landscape) offers. They needed a one-page site separate from their main website. I kept a similar look to the layout of the site so visitors see the two are connected. However I updated the design with the branding colors established for Green Lawns. The Green Lawns website is accessible from the menu bar on reillytreeandlandscape.com. I've also included a tab connecting this site with the company's original site.

Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is the most famous of all Christ statues (Images 1-3). As a matter of fact, it’s so iconic that it’s one of the 7 wonders of the world. However, there are more than 30 variations seen across the globe.

Image 4: Guanajuato, Mexico. This image shows the Cristo Rey statue. Located in the Guanajuato province of Mexico, west of the city of Guanajuato, it is often referred to as Cerro del Cubilete which is the almost 9,000 foot tall mountain that it stands on.

Image 5: Cochabamba, Bolivia. This is the Cristo de la Concordia and is the second largest Jesus Christ statue in the world. It was modeled after Christ the Redeemer in Rio, Brazil. The statue has Jesus’s left hand pointing south, while his right is pointing north.

Image 6: Havana, Cuba. Christ of Havana is a marble statue which overlooks Havana Port. A historical fact about this statue is that it was erected just 2 weeks before Fidel Castro started the Cuban Revolution.

Image 7: Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Cristo del Picacho is one of the 30 wonders of Honduras which stands on top of the El Picacho hill. It is one of the worlds' newest Christ statues. It was built at the end of the twentieth century to welcome the year 2000.

Image 9: Lisbon, Portugal. Not many people know that Lisbon, Portugal has its own huge Christ Redeemer statue. Adjacent to the 25 de Abril Bridge, Sanctuary of Christ the King is one of the most photogenic Christ the Redeemer statues. The 918 foot tall statue stands on an 269 foot pedestal overlooking Lisbon, Portugal.

Image 9: Swiebodzin, Poland. Christ the King is the tallest Jesus Christ statue in the world. It’s located beside the main route which connects Berlin, Germany to Warsaw. This Jesus Christ statue is 118 feet tall including the crown. It is also one of the newest Jesus Christ statues in the world. It was completed in 2010.

Image 10: Vung Tau, Vietnam. At 105 feet tall, Christ the King is the tallest Jesus Christ statue in Asia as well as the fourth tallest in the entire world.

"Prince of Peace" (2004) was painted by prodigy Akiane Kramarik who made a name for herself in the art world at just 8 years old when her portrait of Jesus launched her career. A self-taught painter, Akiane lived in a shack in rural Illinois with her parents and brothers. Kramarik explained that when she was 4, Jesus spoke to her encouraging her to draw and paint her visions. So she began to draw at the age of 4 and was painting at 6. When she decided to paint the face of Jesus she had a difficult time finding a model who resembled the man she'd seen in her visions. A family friend suggested a carpenter they knew as a possible subject. The man's face closely resembled what Kramarik remembered as the face of Jesus. She completed the portrait (which was nearly twice her size) in 40 hours. However when it was shipped to her agent for an exhibition shortly after she completed it, the agent sold the painting without her permission. For sixteen years the original painting was kept hidden. It wasn't until December of 2019 when "Prince of Peace" was finally recovered by Akiane's family and sold to a private collector for $850,000.

Another interesting piece of information related to "Prince of Peace" comes from a child named Colton Burpo. At the age of 4, Colton underwent a critical operation after his appendix burst. He has said that, during this time, he had an experience of visiting Heaven and seeing Jesus. Years later, when he saw Kramarik's "Prince of Peace" on TV, he told his father "Dad, that one’s right."

"The Transfiguration" (1520) by the Italian High-Renaissance master Raphael was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de Medic intended for the Narbonne Cathedral in France. However, it was never sent to France. Instead it was given to the Blessed Amadeo Church in 1523. This is considered one of his finest works and exemplifies his development as an artist. This would be the last work he would ever create and continued to work on until the last days of his life.

In "The Transfiguration", we see two levels of opposition. We see Christ with his power to redeem in the upper section. This area symbolizes the pure and symmetrical elements of the universe. While, on the lower section, we see Man and all of his flaws. There are scenes of chaos and gloom.

From the late 16th century until the early 20th century, "The Transfiguration" was regarded by many as the most famous oil painting in the world.

12/16/2022

One of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt van Rijn (or known more simply as Rembrandt), painted a series of paintings of the head of Jesus. For these paintings, the artist used a live model as a stand-in for Jesus. Each painting depicts an array of emotions in His face including empathy and grace. This was considered revolutionary. Medieval and Renaissance painters had long commonly Christianized Jesus, His family, and close followers while omitting their Jewish identities. The Head of Christ was a big departure from typical Renaissance representations of Jesus. Rather than painting an idealized Christian image of Jesus, Rembrandt painted realistic representations of Him. It is believed that the model for this was a young Sephardic Jew. In 2011-2012, an exhibit, curated by the Louvre, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Detroit Institute of Arts, included The Heads of Christ. They were heralded by The New York Times as “a gutsy makeover of the most-depicted man in Western art. Jesus was, of course, Jewish. But few artists emphasized his ethnicity, or his humanity, as frankly and directly as Rembrandt did.”

12/15/2022

All of these works are beautiful representations of Jesus painted by Mexican artists during the 1700s. Throughout we see the use of vibrant color, flowers, and various symbols. Following are a selection of write-ups explaining each painting:

1. The Baptism of Christ by Nicolás Enríquez, 1773
In this painting, St. John the Baptist is shown baptizing Christ in the Jordan. Enríquez took care to detail the crystalline drops of water poured on Christ’s head and to show his feet submerged in the flowing water of the river.

2. The Entombment of Christca by Juan Rodríguez Juárez, 1702
This work displays the use of brilliant color and vigorous modeling. The composition derives from a Flemish print, but the painter has altered it to heighten the impact of Christ’s seminude body, which is presented as the focus of prayer and meditation.

3. The Soul Guided By Christ by Francisco Martinez, 1732
This painting is an excellent example of the use of symbols in religious painting. The blindfolded woman represents the human soul blinded by the material world and held back by Satan and two figures. On the right stands Christ, His head adorned in flowers rather than thorns. Christ holds a rope to guide the soul to Him, but to do so she must traverse a path lined with danger in the form of a basilisk and the seven headed beast of the Apocalypse. Throughout the painting are words written in Latin, both forward and backward (challenging the viewer to make an effort to read them just as the soul must make an effort to resist temptation and choose salvation) as well as flowers that show that though the path to salvation may be difficult, its rewards are beautiful and worth it.

4. Divine Spouse by Miguel Cabrera, 1750
In The Divine Spouse, we see a reclining Jesus in a lush garden. Hidden among the bed of flowers are symbols of the Passion of Christ. Jesus is crowned by angels and souls in heaven.

5. The Sacred Heart of Jesus by Andrés López, 1797
This painting depicts Christ gesturing at his heart, while a ray of light emanates from the Eucharist held by a personification of the church, illuminating a bible supported by angels.
