Lis Sur Mer Artist Cottages

Lis Sur Mer Artist Cottages Lis Sur Mer is a small complex of Artist cottages on Cape Cod. Located on a private beach in Truro,
(7)

“Magical” is the word most often used to describe Lis Sur Mer. The cottages at Lis Sur Mer were purposely designed and maintained to be old world eclectic, funky, unique, to inspire a true Old Cape Cod experience. The property was designed to create privacy between the three cottages. Dunes were sculpted and extensive plantings of rose bushes, black pine, English oak and olive trees were arranged

as if they had always been growing there, protecting the privacy of each cottage. Most people feel that they are in another country when they first see Lis Sur Mer and we are proud of its uniqueness.

Spring, wonderful Spring, the days get longer and the town wakes up like a hibernating honey bear. Everyone rolls out of their winter bed and starts preparing for the summer with lots of positive energy. If you are here, you own the beach where the whales come in close to shore as they return to the area for the summer. Seals hang out on the beach. You make friends with locals who treat you like their own. You are all in it together mumbling in anticipation of the 12 weeks of summer madness. A mania that everyone has been missing, a lover that you just can’t ever get out of your mind. One that makes you crazy with anticipation and makes you hurt when they leave you again.

This is the place for a very special need; the need to let go… Experience the timelessness of the bay, walk on the beach, reflect. A time to create the memories that are always represented in films where shingled cottages sit alone on the edge of dunes in soft sepia toned focus. It could be anytime in the collective past memory of beach cottages, dunes and timelessness.

Did you know half the park is after dark? Who's discovered the magic of hiking at night? With our vision reduced by darkness, our other senses, especially hearing, are heightened, facilitating deeper connections with nature. And you can't beat stargazing at spots where there's no glow from artificial lighting.

A few tips for experiencing the park at night:

🌕 Start your walk before full darkness to give your eyes time to adjust; it takes about 45 minutes for our vision to adjust to darkness.
🌕 Know your route and let someone know where you're going.
🌕 Hike during full moon for some natural lighting.
🌕 If you need artificial light, use a flashlight with red filter, or place red cellophane over the light. Our eyes are less sensitive to the longer wavelengths of red light, helping to preserve night vision.
🌕 Respect the experience of other nighttime walkers and stargazers by not shining lights on them.

Why I Wake Early
By Mary Oliver

Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and crotchety–
best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light–
good morning, good morning, good morning.
Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.

Did you know that more and more healthcare practitioners are prescribing time in nature to improve physical, mental, and spiritual well-being? Find your happy place in the national seashore to enjoy some physical activity and relax with family and friends.

In anticipation of intense summer visitation, here are a few tips to make your visit more enjoyable:

🌊 Some beach parking lots fill early. Have an alternative plan before you get to the beach.
💰 Town beaches on the oceanside and bayside are managed differently from the six national seashore beaches. Check town websites for fee and permit details.
🐕 Ask at visitor centers about pet regulations. There are season-long and shorter-term pet closures on beaches where shorebirds are nesting.
🛻 Off-road vehicle questions are best answered by staff at the permit office in Provincetown and on the ORV webpage.
🍴 Many local establishments have workforce shortages. Be prepared to wait.
🌡 It can be a long, hot summer for outdoor workers. A kind word, a thank you, and an offer of a cold drink on a hot day go a long way toward keeping batteries charged.

Have patience, be kind, and enjoy your summer!

Shorebird nesting is in full swing! The seashore provides critical habitat for protected and threatened shorebirds, including piping plovers. The first birds arrive here in March. Shorebird activity peaks in June through the end of July. Shorebirds can be found on beaches into October.

Between April 1 and October 15, pet restrictions are in place on beaches to protect nesting, resting (staging), and migrating birds. Look for pet closure signage and follow accordingly. Some areas are closed to pets throughout the season, while other areas have shorter temporary closures. Ask at visitor centers for the most up-to-date information.

Pet closures encompass the entire stretch of beach, from the dunes to the water, at all times and tides, day and night. Shorebirds use the entire area between the dunes and the water to nest, feed, and raise their young. Pet presence disturbs shorebird nesting, feeding, and staging activities. Shorebirds cannot distinguish between dogs and a hungry predator.

In addition to following pet restrictions, remove your trash from the beach. This includes all foods and food scraps like fruit pits, peels, and rinds, which attract gulls, crows, fox, raccoons, and coyotes that prey on shorebirds and eggs.
