Our family has lived and worked on Wicomico Street for more than 100 years. Those that know us also know that Autism is a very important cause that we support, and have experienced personally. The Cork Bar and Crawl Street Tavern are joined by our closest friends from The Bearded Clam, together with Bikers Without Borders and Hunter’s Ride, to raise Autism Awareness with Bikers for Autism. All proceeds benefit The Autistic Children’s Support Group of Worcester County. The day starts off with a Ride for Autism then an afternoon of fun on the Block with live entertainment at Crawl Street Tavern. Rock the Block with us on April 23rd⭐️

Vanishing Ocean City With Bunk Mann

Prior to the mid-1970s, Ocean City was a seasonal resort. The tourist season ran from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day and it was said, “you could fire a cannon down Baltimore Avenue the day after Labor Day and not hit a soul.” Less than 900 people lived in town year-round.
This aerial photo from the spring of 1955 shows a mostly vacant town with the Oceanic Motel down by the Inlet in the final stages of construction. The large dark building in the upper left is the Atlantic Hotel and the Inlet Lodge can be seen on the far right. The building facing the Boardwalk with the cupola still houses Trimper’s beautiful 1912 carousel and popular kiddie rides, but the Tidal Wave Roller Coaster was still 30 years in the future.
The Inlet Parking Lot was in its infancy and was only two lanes deep along a much more narrow beach.

Happy Birthday Fenwick Lighthouse!

WAY BACK MACHINE: A Fenwick Island Birthday!
This light went on for the first time 162 years ago today--on Aug. 1, 1859. The government had purchased land for the lighthouse the year before. As there was nothing else out there, the land's owner--a woman named Mary Hall--agreed to sell it for just $50.

This photo is from 1891. Still nothing around out there! Development wouldn't come to Fenwick in any serious way until well into the 20th century.

At the time this lighthouse was built, the nearest beacon to the south was 60 miles away, on Assateague Island. Plus, the shoals off Fenwick could cause trouble in bad weather. Here is a description of the thinking involved from the 1855 "Annual Report of the Lighthouse Board:"

"A light-house in the vicinity of Fenwick’s island will serve to guide vessels from the southern ports, bound into the Delaware, and also the great coasting trade with the same or a more northern destination. Fenwick’s Island shoal is a very dangerous one for those, and also in some degree for the European trade of Philadelphia. It is very common for ships coming from the eastward to fall in with the coast considerably to the southward of Cape Henlopen, and in thick weather a light on Fenwick’s island would serve to ascertain their position when the Henlopen light was invisible."

The great folks at Sand Taxi need our help! They are a beach set up/take down service thathauls and sets up all your beach gear at your desired location in the morning, and packs it up and delivers it back to you in the evening!
The service they provide allows families, or individuals that are elderly, or disabled to enjoy Ocean Cities beaches with the comfort of their own gear, but without the difficulty of carrying it themselves.
Please sign the petition to let the Town Council know, Sand Taxi is an integral facet of our OC community, that provides a much needed and valuable service! Happy Ours is proud to support Sand Taxi!
