“The opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen has increased interactions between cities and expanded the flow of visitors for both business and tourism across the wide area,” says a representative from West Japan Railway Company (West JR) when asked how the new Shinkansen has impacted the region in recent years.

Hokuriku’s hot spring villages:
It’s hoped the new extension will bring the underexplored parts of the Hokuriku region into the international limelight. Among the top highlights are the area’s hot spring (onsen) resort villages.

“Numerous hot spring resorts, ranging from reasonably priced to luxury ryokan (inns), are lined up to meet the needs of travelers, and with the extension of the Shinkansen line in March 2024, we expect many tourists to visit these areas,” says Omotegushi.

The four-century-old KAI Kaga is among the onsen ryokans in Ishikawa looking forward to welcoming new waves of travelers.

A new bullet train extension will connect more of Japan’s Hokuriku region with Tokyo from March 2024, making this beautiful area easier than ever to experience.
