We always enjoy seeing our friends, pottery customers and fellow musicians at the Folk Festival, this year we will not be able to attend We will miss everyone. If you attend this year’s festival however, Duffield Pottery donated a nice hand made mug for the festival to raffle off for the benefit of the festival. See if you can win it.

Unloaded the kiln at 5:15 AM this morning , around 50 various pieces. The brush work and over glaze on the buck turned out all right. I will only make a few minor changes on the shading when I do the brush work on the large slab pot.

After so much time, bending over a piece with a paint brush and iron oxide you just have to walk away from it and come back and look at it later before you make any changes that you will regret. I use iron oxide brush, work a lot in my artwork, but I seem to forget that iron oxide and myself, have a love-hate relationship.

Well, I promised everyone that follows me that I would keep everyone posted on the development of this large slab jar that I call. “The Gilmer Buck” or, The Reed Buck. it came through a successful bisque firing last week. But I have been hesitant to start the brush work, it is such an important piece to me, and iron oxide on the end of a paintbrush is not very forgiving, so last night I grabbed a 15 inch platter that I did not have a design for and I decided to start the brush work on it of the Buck as a test run. I’m glad I did. I’m already discovering some changes I’m going to make in my brush technique when I start on the large slab piece in a few days. the brush work isn’t done on the platter yet but I thought I would post it anyway.

We have been working hard to develop some new glazes, shooting for something more in the cool colors line. We’ve done a lot of testing and almost have the bugs worked out. Trying really hard to get a glaze load of mugs out before Mothers Day.

Just an update on my latest slab/wheel thrown combo. I first saw this buck hanging on a wall in a small local sporting goods store. It was my first week of college, first week away from home. I was mesmerized by it, never occurred to me to incorporate it into my artwork. Now, 45 years later and with the idea from a friend, I’ve decided to put him on a piece of pottery. Hopefully it makes it through the additional processes and kiln firings. Stay tuned.

Wow, there it is. I got it roughed in this afternoon. Tomorrow after it is more firm, I will trim any excess clay off and let it start drying before the bisque kiln. A lot of work this afternoon, I remember why I only make three or four of these a year.

Starting a project I have wanted to start for almost 2 years. I have prepared all of the necessary parts for another large slab/wheel thrown piece that I will do iron oxide brush work on once it comes through the first firing. When I set all of the pieces out and photographed them, I thought “wow this looks like some kind of a kit” .
I have a sketch done in colored pencil of the deer that I will later paint on the pot. This deer has a very special story behind it from over 60 years ago. Stay tuned.

Getting excited about the Folk Festival! It’s great when some of your musician buddies are kind enough to setup right beside of your pottery booth so you can still get in on a jam session and tend your booth.

We would love to visit with you if you get a chance to stop by our booth at West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville, WV June 15-17.
