Rookie mistake- so excited and focused on the interior design, I didn’t consider outside spaces until it was too late to hire a landscaper. A few weeks of blood, sweat, quite a few tears, yards of dirt and mulch- and voila! We have grass, perennial gardens, a fire pit, and patio seating and dining area. Thank you to my mom, my daughter Lauren, my sister Lisa, and brother-in-law Jon for coming to the rescue!

Years ago a friend told me I was an excellent homemaker. I was deeply offended, reacting to what the word brought to mind- 1950s Stepford wives, women’s place being in the home and all that. I mean sheesh, I had co-founded a nonprofit and was working full time! Older and wiser now, I’ve embraced the term and realize what a compliment it is. For me, home making is creating a sanctuary for family and friends to relax, settle in, feel safe and cared for. Even though this space is being made for people I don’t yet know, I hope to infuse it with all the calm, nurturing, cozy feels I try to create in my own home.

I started calling the new construction the sage house in my head because I chose the siding color early on.  Green is my favorite color and seemed a perfect starting point for the mood I wanted to create.  Green evokes nature, growth, renewal, creativity.  The herb sage is known for its cleansing properties.  The word sage is synonymous with wisdom.
The past couple years have challenged us to think differently about the spaces we live, work, rest, and play in.  We’ve discovered how our wellbeing is deeply connected to the rooms and buildings we inhabit.  I’ve been busy searching for soothing green paint colors, whimsical wallpapers, warm rustic wood tones and natural materials to try to create a calming sanctuary for future guests.

A pandemic project that started with an impulse purchase of a wooded lake lot near the headwaters of the Mississippi, followed by serious buyer’s remorse, then excitement about the possibilities that could emerge from such a beautiful plot of land.  I’ve always loved designing cozy spaces for friends and family to gather and building a vacation rental cottage has been a dream of mine (hopefully also a viable business endeavor). An opportunity to curate a place for people to connect with nature, the people they love, and with themselves.
And so it begins with four walls and a roof!  I’m excited to share this journey and get advice and feedback along the way.  And if all goes as planned- this little sanctuary will be ready for guests early this summer!
