Bobaflex – July 23, 2022 – Newport Music Hall

We love Bobaflex, and have seen them in concert 6 times. They put on an excellent show, as did South of Eden and Lost Past Everest.

Newport Music Hall on the other hand, was not impressive. They did not accept cash, and we were not aware until we were already inside. So, we just had to be thirsty the whole time.

It cost $20 to park, and when it was time to leave the concert, 200 people set off their car alarms simultaneously, which was deafening.

Finally, driving through Columbus, Ohio is a nightmare. 0 stars, will avoid for the rest of my life. No one uses blinkers, cares about what lane they're in, or what color the stop lights are. Also, college kids are constantly zipping in front of you on scooters.

Dolly Sods Wilderness

First, you drive uphill on gravel forever, it's such a long drive, when we went in 2016, we gave up and turned around. There are a lot of potholes, and the trees shade the road, so you won't see some of them.

Last year, we parked and walked across the street to hike the long side of the trail. We hiked on the Blackbird K**b Trail out and back, about six miles. Thankfully, we went past the parking area on the way back, to the other side of the trail. Less than .25 mile later, was the most unforeseen and magnificent overlook.

If you have a day or more, Dolly Sods is absolutely worth the trip. Gas and snacks are your only expenses for this trip. No cell signal service here.

Black Water Falls is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The waterfalls are beautiful, but the trails lead to an enchanted forest. It feels as though fairies, gnomes, and other mystical creatures could show up at any time. The thick moss and big rocks can be a little difficult to navigate if you're not wearing the correct shoes.

Spruce K**b Lake is near the bottom of the mountain. Don't think you're going to hike there from the top 😂 like we did .

In July 2022, we returned to Spruce K**b for an 8 mile hike. It's absolutely beautiful there. Seeing how the plants react to their surroundings as opposed to the way they look at lower elevations is interesting. There are absolutely people there frequently, but once you're a few miles out, it's less likely you'll see others. From the entrance to the trail for 4 miles, we saw no one.

Salt Fork State Park Beach is a beautiful lake beach. It was clean and there weren't a lot of people there when we got there in the morning. I would definitely suggest getting your area set up early, as this is a popular recreation spot. No cost if you pack your bag with snacks 😊 The snack bar didn't have a lot of options.

We also stopped at 360 Burger, which was fantastic! They had meals that included an ice cream cone. Also, large portions filled up our teenagers.

Point Pleasant Riverfront Park has beautiful artwork everywhere, however, we didn't see anywhere to hike.

The Mothman Museum is steeped in local historical cryptid folklore.

The coffee grinder sells delightful Mothman shaped cookies. Their coffee drinks, soups, and sandwiches are also excellent.

If you decide to attend the Mothman Festival, be forewarned, there will be an insane amount of people around. It's really cool to see how everyone is dressed, but there's not much space to move around and long lines for everything.

McDonough Wildlife Refuge
Our hiking journey began here. It's our old faithful park. It has plenty of trails to spend a few hours. All but two trails (each has a hill) are great for beginners. You will typically run into other people, and you'll see lots of dogs.

Spruce K**b, WV. We walked around a bit. It's an absolutely gorgeous and free visit, but you won't truly take in the wonder around you unless you spend more time there. There's a short trail around the top of the mountain. It's only the beginning...

Smoke Hole Caverns was an interesting place to visit. The temperature is cool underground. Learning about stalactites and stalagmites would have been so much more fun and impactful here. Would recommend it if you happen to be in the area. Unfortunately, not a free visit though:
