The beauty and symbolism of seashells was an important part of the Native American culture, from 500 A.D. to the late 1700s, southern Atlantic native tribes included the lightning whelk into their daily life. The turning spiral on the whelk shell is often interpreted as life’s journey, the cycle of life. The shells were used for sacred ceremonial purposes, spirituality, trading, tools, gifts, drinking cups, beads and jewelry. The Whelk shell had a special meaning which played a significant role in everyday life and many journeyed to the coast on spiritual and meaningful quests to collect them.
