This is where the big yurt (25 feet, now) is going to live. Excavated, poured, leveled, and so forth. A big tip of the fuzzy Mongol hat to clients Cheryl and Mike for all the help and support.

Always the most fiddley bit, the ring requires a lot of specialised work. Cutting, steaming, bending, gluing, clamping, sanding, routing, and drilling... but it's *so* worth it. I did the math for 55 poles, and it worked out perfectly. A loverly just-slighty-over-fourty-eight-inches-to-accomodate-the-special-crown roof ring. Regardé:

Engaging in one last build in the current Philly location. This one's a grand, four season ger, twenty-four feet in diameter. It will be similar to the one I live in, but even better, because the client has better taste than I had budget.

A long story made short, my beautifully brutal Singer canvas machine toasted her motor after 70 years. Scrambling to find a replacement motor has proven difficult. A friend let me borrow his Juki, and I'm in love.

I still wanna get my faithful girl up on her feet again, but I have a new aspiration to contend with.

Hmmm... something's screwy with this site/page. I've been getting notifications about it for months now, but prompted to 'sign in' to do anything about it. That's kinda redundant, as this page is supposed to be controlled through my own personal account. FB suggested that there may have been a hacking attempt. Kinda silly, though... I mean who on earth would want to pretend to be an artisan yurt-builder? It works again, so I guess I should be grateful for that. Hoping the staff at Etsy can help iron out that page as well. Crossing fingers.

Good News, Everyone- I may now call my little yurt-mongering venture "Yurtopia Internacional`". Stella Blue is going to Scotland. I am well pleased :D

Ok, so this is a new one on me. I've actually dulled a needle in Bertha (Yurtopia's big, angry, canvas-specific sewin' machine). I've broken needles, sure- but apparently not as often as I used to :)

Singer makes a good sewing machine, but even so, sometimes they require maintenance or parts. Fortunately, there are online vendors who cater to them as what still use antique canvas-stitchers. Replacement foot is replaced. Yurt skins (three of 'em) can now proceed at speed. Gotta remember to pick up some Death Wish coffee... .

So I'm elbows-deep into a custom build, and among the client's desired features is a more traditional, Mongolian style of crown for the roof ring. For me, this is a new thing... and I'm truly enjoying the challenge :) Behold the first mock-up:
