Well, we’ve sadly come to the last port on our African cruise adventure, San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was a gorgeous sunny day today and the atmosphere was filled with holiday spirit. Since we’ve been here a couple times before, we bypassed the fort and rain forest and spent the day walking through Old San Juan to take in the sights and enjoy a snack and some liquid refreshment. As we had a late departure, we were able to meet up with some friends in the “new” side of the city for happy hour followed by dinner. A wonderful day was had by all!

Last Wednesday, after leaving the African continent, we had a port stop in Mindelo, Cape Verde. What a clean and modern place in comparison to our last few ports. We decided just to get out on our own today to check out the city, and that turned out to be a wonderful choice. We first walked along the beachfront and saw many colorful buildings and artistic displays along the way. The fish market was buzzing with locals purchasing the freshly caught, beautiful fish and fishermen delivering their fresh catches. Down the block was a miniature version of the Belem in Lisbon. And, just around the corner from there was a huge open-air market where the locals sold all of their wares. We then walked through the town to admire sights such as the palace and university. We also stopped by the Cape Verde National Museum. After taking in the sights, we took a stroll along the beautiful beach and visited a cute beachside restaurant for a lunch consisting of freshly caught tuna. We were walking back toward the ship and noticed a few of our friends enjoying some drinks at a beachside bar, so we decided to stop and join them before embarking the ship. It was a truly gorgeous and enjoyable day. Now we’re heading back toward home with 5 days at sea before reaching San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Sadly, we reached our last stop on the African continent today, Dakar, Senegal. Today, we took an emotionally gripping tour to Isle de Goree, from where most of the slave traffic to Europe and the Americas originated. After a brief ferry ride, we embarked on a journey of some
Of the darkest times on our history. Our walking tour began with a tour of the slave quarters through which most West African slave trade began. Seeing the small quarters and the door that people went through on their last glimpse of their homeland was especially powerful. We continued on our walking tour to visit the Catholic Church, the central market, the old governor’s palace, and the Museum of history. At the end of our walk, we stopped at a local restaurant for a cold beer and then had some free time to wander about on our own. This day was a fantastic ending of our journey through the African experience.

Banjul, Gambia was the stop on our itinerary today. Here, we took a half-day highlights tour of the city. Our first stop was at the National Museum of Gambia, where we viewed the history of the country. Then we stopped for photos at Arch 22 and the local mosque before an obligatory visit to a jewelry shop. Next, it was off to a tie-dye demonstration and small market where they sold their wares. Afterwards we were treated to some wildlife viewing - the crocodile pools. Following this, we visited a local beachside resort for a cold beer and quick relaxation break. Finally, we were provided a shopping opportunity at the Banjul market.

Today we arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. We joined an all-day tour of the city this morning. Our first stop was at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where we had a guided view of the modern Catholic Church. Next on the agenda was a stop at the National Museum of Côte d’Ivoire, where we enjoyed a guided tour through the history of the native civilization. We then drove through the upscale Cocody neighborhood, which contains the university and all of the embassies, on our way to lunch. A nice buffet was provided at a local hotel with a waterfront view overlooking downtown Abidjan. Finally, it was off to the local market for our shopping opportunity.

Takoradi, Ghana was our port of call today. From here, we took a half-day tour of the Twin Cities, Takoradi and Secondi, to give us an overview of the area. After driving along the coast, we arrived at our first stop, the local fish wharf. This is the major fish market in the region. It was very interesting to see all the hustle and bustle and the ice processing shed. Then, after driving back toward the ship and viewing more of the scenery, we stopped at a local hotel for refreshments and a Ghanaian cultural show. The show was absolutely incredible and we had an open bar for about an hour at 11:30 in the morning. When we got back to the ship, we had some time to shop at the stalls set up at the port.

Today, we landed in Luanda, Angola. Luanda is a large city, but it is not really set up for tourism. We took a shuttle out of the port to briefly check out the downtown area in the morning and then took a city highlights tour in the afternoon. Our first stop was the Church of the Nazarene across from the beachfront walk. Next, it was on to the National Museum of Military History to stroll around the old fort and admire the displays. We then took a scenic drive up the beach “resort” area of Luanda. Our final stop was for photos of the Angolan Mausoleum and Parliament buildings.

On Tuesday, we were scheduled to dock in the harbor in Luderitz, Namibia for a day in port. We did dock in the morning, but the winds were high so the captain decided not to run the tender operations to shore. We did not go ashore, but the captain did let the local authorities aboard to perform our passport entry stamps so that we could bypass that step for our next port, Walvis Bay, Namibia.

We arrived in Walvis Bay on Wednesday morning for a long, full day in port. Here we embarked on a full day excursion to explore the Namibian desert and sail the Walvis Bay harbor. We first joined a caravan of 4x4’s to explore the Namibian desert and rode through the dunes of Sandwich Bay. On the ride there, we were treated with views of the beautiful coastline, full of seals and both white and pink flamingos. We passed through the salt flats and a pink lake, colored by the salt production process. Once we arrive at Sandwich Bay, we were greeted by monstrously huge dunes, which we “surfed” in our 4x4’s. We were able to get out and climb one of the large dunes for some amazing pictures. Then, we were treated by a lovely snack buffet as well as cold beer and champagne in the middle of the dunes.

When we returned from our visit to the dunes, we immediately boarded a small boat for our cruise around the harbor. We sailed out to a small island that was completely covered in seals. The sights and smells were amazing. On the way there seals and large white pelicans boarded our boat for an up close view of the amazing animals. We also had sightings of dolphins, pink flamingos, more seals and pelicans, and many other native birds. On the way back, we had similar wildlife experiences and were treated to another snack along with local oysters, beer, and champagne.

Once back, we met up with 7 of our friends for dinner out at a local restaurant. It was truly a magical day in Namibia.

Yesterday, we arrived in Cape Town, South Africa for a two-day stay in this amazing city. On the first day we took a private excursion with eight friends to Aquila Game reserve for a safari to see the big five African game animals. We then had some free time in the evening to explore the Victoria and Alfred waterfront area of the city, where we enjoyed a burger and beer by the harbor. On the second day, we embarked on a ship tour to the Cape of Good Hope national park, Boulders Beach (for penguin observation), and a botanical garden on Table Mountain. Since we had an evening departure, we were able to enjoy another quick bite and drinks on the waterfront again.

Our day at Aquila was utterly incredible. On the 2-1/2 hour drive there, we were fortunate to see a wild baboon sitting on the railing of a bridge upon exiting a tunnel through the mountains. When we arrived, we were treated to a welcome cocktail and delicious buffet lunch at the beautiful resort. We then embarked on the open game drive where we encountered four of the big five animals, the elephant, lion, rhinoceros, and Cape buffalo. We did not get to see the leopard as they are mainly nocturnal and we were there in the afternoon. We also had sightings of hippos, zebras, giraffes, antelopes, springboks, and elands.

On the excursion to the Cape of Good Hope we had another full day of touring. We drove along Chapman’s Peak Drive for spectacular views of Camps Bay, Houts Bay, Long Beach, and enjoyed amazing views at our photo store at Chapman’s Peak. We then traveled down to the Cape where we first stopped at the Cape Point Lighthouse. The funicular was out of service, but we had just enough time to walk/jog up to the lighthouse for some excellent panoramic views of the cape. Afterwards, we drove down to the Cape for the obligatory photo stop that shows you were there. We did get to see ostriches and elands while in the Cape park area. Afterwards, we went to a gorgeous beachside restaurant for a sit down lunch, followed by a walk to Boulders Beach to see a local penguin colony. Then it was off to our final stop of the day, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

The city of Durban, South Africa is where we landed today. We had a relatively late arrival (11:00) so we were able to enjoy the scenery of sailing into the city. While here, we embarked on an excursion to Gwahumbe Game Reserve for an open air safari drive through the reserve.

Although not among the largest reserves which allow for viewings of all the big 5, we were treated to a beautiful park with sightings of many animals. Those animals included blue wildebeests, impalas, zebras, hippos, and giraffes. Once our drive was complete, we were treated to a lunch snack at Gwahumbe’s beautiful and scenic cafe. On the way back to the ship, we took a scenic drive through the Valley of 1000 Hills. We truly enjoyed this amazing day with 15 of our friends from the ship.

Maputo, Mozambique was our stop for today. From here, we embarked on a tour that gave us an overview of the largest city in Mozambique. We first visited the Maputo Central train station, which is supposedly the seventh most beautiful one in the world. Our next stop was Maputo Central Market, where the locals buy all of their fish, spices, fruits, and vegetables. Next, it was on to Maputo Fort for some photos While we stopped at Independence Square for some more pictures, we walked by the Ministry of tourism, which was designed by Gustav Eiffel. On our way to our final stop, Frits Market, we passed by the new US Embassy and a beautiful Catholic Church. Before getting back on the ship, we stopped at a cafe for a taste of local pastry and beer. Mozambique is a bit of a third world country, but we certainly enjoyed our time here.

Today, we found ourselves in Hell-Ville, on the island of Nosy-Be in Madagascar. On our agenda today was an excursion to Lokobe National Park. The park was on a small island to which we had to take a short boat ride.

Well, what we lacked on lemur sightings yesterday was certainly made up for today. When we got to the island we walked onto the beach and then immediately embarked on a 2-hour trek through the forest. We were treated to sightings of various geckos and lizard, lush vegetation, mango trees, a boa constrictor, and a large group of lemurs swinging through the trees. After the hike through the forest, we were given about an hour to enjoy refreshment, shop for local crafts, and relax on the beach. It was an absolutely enjoyable experience.

Our port of call today was Mamoudzou, on the French island of Mayotte. There were no tours offered by the ship today, so we went out and ventured around the area.

First we hiked to Pointe Mahabou park to look for lemurs. We did not get to see any, but the hike was very picturesque. We then strolled around downtown Mamoudzou before taking a short ferry ride to Petite Terre. While there we found a cute little beachside restaurant where we enjoyed a light snack and some cold beer from Madagascar. And, when the ferry arrived back to the port, I was interviewed on the local TV station. So, I guess I’m a bit of o celebrity here in Mamoudzou, lol!

The Tanzanian island of Zanzibar has been our home away from home for the past two days. This place is just as interesting and magical as what you would imagine from stories you’ve heard or movies you’ve seen. The downtown area of Stone Town is a unique myriad of mazes with narrow streets and a definite African flare.

The morning of the first day, we took a walking tour of Stone Town to see the sights and learn about the history of Zanzibar. Our first stop was at the Darajani Bazar where the locals sell fresh meats, vegetables, fish, and spices. From there, we walked to the slave market where we saw a memorial to the slave trade from Eastern Africa, their quarters, and a chapel. We then continued our walk through the Persian baths, by some ornate doors, and past St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a mosque, and through the Old Fort of Zanzibar. On the way to our final stop at the Bachata restaurant for refreshments, we also passed by the Freddie Mercury Museum.

After getting back to the ship, we had just enough time to take a shower and get ready for dinner at The Rock restaurant. We boarded a van with 11 of our friends for the 90-minute drive to this spectacular restaurant on the eastern coast of Zanzibar, which sits on top of the waters of the Indian Ocean. When we arrived at high tide, we had to take a canoe, but on the way back, the tide had subsided and we were able to walk the path back to the van. The food was incredible, the views were unbelievable, and the company was just perfect.

Our second day in Zanzibar was much more relaxed. It rained in the morning, so we decided not to leave the ship until afternoon. We walked around Stone Town a bit more and visited the Freddy Mercury Museum which we had seen yesterday. After some shopping, we stopped at Mercury’s Bar for a quick bite and some Kilimanjaro beers before heading back to the ship.

After another 4 days at sea, we’ve reached the stunning islands of The Seychelles, for our two-day port stop in the capital of Victoria.

On our first day, we embarked on an excursion to Praslin Island and Vallee de Mai. From the ship, we boarded a ferry for the 75-minute ride to the island. Our first stop was the Valee de Mai national park where we enjoyed a guided walk through the forest to observe Coco de Mer palm trees, which are native to the islands. We were also fortunate to be able to spot several black parrots while there. Next, we stopped at a beautiful local beach for a quick photo op. Then it was off to a local restaurant for a delicious buffet lunch, and some free time to take a swim in the Indian Ocean at the beach across the street before boarding the ferry back to the ship.

After returning to the ship to freshen up, we headed out to dinner with eight of our friends to a seaside restaurant called Del Place. What an absolutely gorgeous pot we picked! The atmosphere was magical and the food divine! I really don’t think that there’s a better place on the entire Seychelles island of Mahe.

On the second day, we opted to tour around Victoria on our own. We took a scenic stroll, checking out sites such as the Little Ben clock, the Seychelles sign, and the Victoria market. We then hiked up the hill to the botanical gardens to view the famous giant tortoises up close. After a little snack we had to return to the ship to get ready to sail away to our next destination.

Salalah, Oman was our port of call today. This port (along with an extra day in Seychelles) is the replacement for Petra and Sharm Al Sheik. This morning we embarked on a 4x4 tour to the dunes for some four wheeling in the Arabian desert, a stop at the lost city of Ubar, and a buffet lunch.

The ride out to the dunes was about 2 hours and consisted of a caravan of 30 4x4 vehicles. The off-roaring was alright, not quite as good as our Dubai experience from the past, but it was scenic. We stopped for a couple photo ops at the dunes and saw some camels in the wild. The ruins at Ubar were not very extensive, but interesting nonetheless. Then, on the way back to the ship, we stopped at a camel racing stadium for an Omani boxed lunch followed by a quick stop at a Frankincense farm.

10/31/2023

Today we arrived at the port of Safaga, Egypt, on the Red Sea. We took an all day tour from the Red Sea, through the Eastern Desert, and along the Nile River valley to see Karnak, Luxor, and the Valley of the Kings. It was a long 3 1/2 - 4 hour drive (each way) through the desert and several cities and villages that dotted the Nile, until we reached our first stop, the Valley of the Kings.

The Valley of the Kings is the resting place for many Pharos of ancient Egypt. While there, we were able to see the tombs of 2 Egyptian Pharos, Ramses IV and Ramses IX. King Tut is also buried here, but we did not have time to see that tomb, and were told that it is not nearly as well preserved as the others. We could certainly feel the rich sense of history walking down into the tombs and admiring all of the hieroglyphics that told the life stories of the Pharos. After leaving the burial sites, while still in the Valley of the Kings, we had 2 quick photo stops. The first was at the palace of Queen Hatshepsut and the next was the Colossi of Memnon, both incredible sites.

Next, we crossed back over the Nile River to the city of Luxor, where our first stop was at the Temple of Karnak. Here, we had an hour to explore the amazing monuments and walls adorned with hieroglyphics with our tour guide. By the time we were done touring Karnak, everyone had worked up quite an appetite and we were treated to a late lunch/early dinner at the Sonesta Luxor Resort, on the banks of the Nile. The buffet meal was incredible and we were treated to sunset on the Nile while dining.

The day was not over yet as we had one more stop before heading back to the ship. We had an evening visit to the Temple of Luxor. This temple was a bit smaller than Karnak, but monuments were certainly no less magnificent. Between the two temples, there is a sphinx-lined boulevard called the Avenue of Sphinxes, which connects them. We were fortunate to see this all lit up as darkness had fallen.

It’s been a very long and exhausting (in a good way) day for us. The history and ruins are ubiquitous in the Luxor region and it is quite a magical place. Well, it’s now time for the long ride back to the ship where we have a few more days at sea until we reach our next port.

Today we visited Limassol, Cypress. From here we took a tour out to the west coast of Cypress to see Pafos and the mosaics of Dionysos. Our first stop was at a mountaintop lookout where it is said, Aphrodite was born. Next, we went to the necropolis of Pafos to visit the ancient tombs.

Following the necropolis, we journeyed to the archaeological site of the Mosaics of Dionysos. Here we were treated to some of the most well preserved ancient mosaics in the world. We had some time to wander the site which had an old lighthouse, and a small well-preserves amphitheater and agora. We also had a couple minutes to walk the lovely seaside pedestrian area filled with many quaint cafes. On the way back to the ship, we had a quick stop to sample some delicious sweet treats from Cypress.

After getting back to the ship, we had a couple hours until all aboard, so we decided to take the ship shuttle to downtown Limassol. While there we enjoyed a light bite and local beer at a seaside restaurant. Then we took a short stroll down the beautiful boardwalk to take in the gorgeous sights. Then a little shopping and back to the ship to get ready for our transit through the Suez Canal.

10/28/2023

Well, yesterday during dinner time, the captain made a special announcement to give us some unpleasant news. Due to the current situation in Israel, our port calls in Aqaba, Jordan (for Petra) and Sharm el Sheik, Egypt have been cancelled. We kind of expected this since the gulf of Aqaba directly borders the southern part of Israel. At least we had been to Petra in the past, however there is a lot more there that we have yet to see. As of this time, we are still scheduled to go through the Suez Canal in a couple days to get to the eastern coast of Africa.

Today we arrived in the port of Suda, on the Greek island of Crete. We joined a half-day tour with our first stop at the British Commonwealth War Memorial where soldiers are buried from the Battle of Crete. Next it was off to the lovely old monastery of Agia Triada. Here we had time to explore the monastery and enjoy olive oil and wine tastings produced by the monks.

After a quick stop at a scenic point overlooking the city of Chania, we ventured into the city. Here, we had a short walking tour of the bustling downtown area followed by an hour of free time. I must say that the seaside pedestrian area was absolutely breathtaking. We spent our time strolling, getting a bite to eat and a cold beer, and doing a little shopping.

Our adventure today brought us to the port of La Goulette, Tunisia. From here, we took part in a tour of Carthage, the village of Sidi Bu Said. Unfortunately, due to the current unrest in the region, we were unable to visit the Medina or any part of central Tunis.

The ancient city of Carthage was very interesting. Most of the ruins have been destroyed, but what is left was fascinating. Our first stop was in the old amphitheater sacrifices and gladiator battles occurred. Next we stopped at the ancient cemetery which was built in 6 levels. The Roman baths were our next stop; the ruins in this area were a bit more extensive.

After this, we visited the Palace of Baron D’Erlanger, in an area called Sidi Bu Said. This was a quaint little town with beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea. The buildings here were all white with blue trim, reminiscent of Santorini. Here, there were plenty of shops and locals hawking their wares in street side booths.

Finally, we were provided a delicious lunch of chicken and couscous at a local restaurant in Carthage. The old aqueducts were right across the street, so we had some time to wander around them. Then it was back to the ship to set sail for the next port.

Casablanca, Morocco was landing point three days ago. From here, we embarked on an all-day private mini-bus excursion with 7 of our friends that we had met on previous adventures.

We started the day with a visit to the Old City of
Casablanca, where we had a short walking tour. Then it was off to Hassan II Mosque. This is apparently the second largest in the world, behind the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. It was an absolutely beautiful building with views of the Atlantic Ocean from both inside and outside on the expansive square. Next, we drove along the coast through the Ain Diab neighborhood and stopped at a local seaside restaurant for a refreshment of mint tea. Then we had a stop at the huge mega mall in Casablanca for some shopping, a bit uninspiring, but nice nonetheless.

Next, we travelled through the upscale Anfa neighborhood where we saw the Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, the Synagogue, the royal palace, and many of the foreign embassies, including that of the US.

Then, it was off to the Old Medina which consisted of various shops of locals selling their wares. While there, went into a non-discript doorway and entered into a beautiful Moroccan restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious local lunch. I had the Rafisa and Mark had the Chicken Tanjine, which were quite tasty. Finally, we walked over to the New Medina to shop for some locally made crafts before heading back to the ship.

As we had a late departure, we decided to head out for a light dinner with our friends Bruce and Alex. We went back to the Old City and ate a a quaint local restaurant called Squala. We then walked through the park to Rick’s Cafe, where I just couldn’t resist purchasing a t-shirt. Then it was time to go back to the ship to get ready to set sail for the next destination on our itinerary.

Today we arrived at our first African port of many to come, Agadir, Morocco. We had a short 5-hour stop and took a tour to provide an overview of what he area. Our first stop was at the Casbah (fort) overlooking the city. We arrived there just after sunrise to view the fort and enjoy a panoramic view of Agadir. Then we had a quick stop at the local mosque and were given a brief description of the customs. Next, it was on to the Medina for some nice architectural photos. After that, we had an obligatory stop at the Soukh of Agadir, which was quite large and you could find almost anything that you would need. Our final stop was a refreshment stop at a local restaurant on the beautiful beachfront of Agadir. Quite a lot was packed into this tour on our short stop in port.

Today we arrived in Arrecife, on the Spanish island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. Lanzarote is a very dry and volcanic island. We had a short stop here today and embarked on a 4-hour tour of the island. We enjoyed a nice panoramic ride around with stops at a few interesting view points. The highlight of the tour was a stop at James del Agua. This is a beautiful lava tube with a natural lake, several cafes, a museum, and a small underground auditorium for concerts and such. Once we got back to the ship, we had just enough time to stroll the marina and grab a quick snack. Overall, it has been a very nice day.

After a full 7 days crossing the Atlantic, we finally arrived at our first port of call, Funchal, on the Portuguese islands of Madeira. And what a fantastic place it was.

We started out the day embarking on an open-air 4x4 tour around the southern part of the island. We were whisked through the steep and narrow roads leading out of Funchal to the lovely, mountainous countryside of Madeira. We had a few scenic stops including Nun’s Valley, Cabo Girao, and a quaint fishing village. We also enjoyed a little picturesque four-wheeling on the rugged mountainous terrain.

After the tour deposited us back at the ship, we had just enough time to stroll into town, enjoy some of the sights, and grab a tasty lunch at the local Beerhouse. Now it’s time to set sail toward our next port.

We’ve reached the final port of our South Pacific and Panama Canal adventure today, Cartagena, Colombia. It was a short 4 1/2 hour stop, but we did fit in an excursion that brought us to the San Felipe Fort, a quick shopping stop at a local bazaar, and the old walled city. We had a walking tour of Old Cartagena where we stopped at all of the old squares as well as the church and Inquisitions Palace.

Now, it’s back to the ship to enjoy our last two days onboard before departing in Fort Lauderdale.

Today was a beautiful day for our full transit of the Panama Canal. We travelled through the old Miraflores, Pedro Miguel, and Gatun locks to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. The narrated experience started early in the morning (about 6:30) and lasted until about 7:00 in the evening. Enjoy the pictures.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica was our stop for the day today. Our excursion today was an all-day trip to the capitol city of San Jose, approximately 2 hours each way.

We first stopped at a gift shop for some local fruit and coffee sampling as well as shopping on the way to the San Jose. Then it was off to the city to tour the National Theater of Costa Rica, where our tour guide discussed with us the history of the theater while showing us around. We then walked to the Gold Museum for a guided tour. The museum is housed in an upside down triangle shape, where the roof is an outdoor plaza and the three floors below decrease in size as you go down. We didn’t have any time to wander the city on our own as we had to depart for our lunch stop on the way back to the ship. The lunch was a delicious native Costa Rican meal of uniquely prepared vegetables, rice and beans, chicken, beef fajitas, and a pastry dessert with a delicious papaya cream.
