Iron Eagle was considered the greatest War Chief of the Cheyenne. He fought many battles, always winning.
He was not afraid of any other man or Tribe. His courage was legendary and he and his horse, always the fastest, were the pride of his Tribe.
One day Iron Eagle's brother, Four Fingers, came to tell him that Spotted Fawn, the most beautiful woman in the Tribe had agreed that he also wanted to marry Spotted Fawn. But Four Fingers knew he did not stand a chance. He was not a great warrior, because he was crippled.
As a small boy he had lost both his thumbs in an accident so.. his name. Without a grip, he was unable to throw a spear or hold a knife as well as others. Never would he have a beautiful woman or win a war like Iron Eagle. His only consolation was that the people considered him special because four was a sacred number
There were four seasons, four directions, and four names for Spirit, and this man had only four fingers; that was a special sign. Iron Eagle was very happy with the news of Spotted Fawn. To celebrate, he declared that he and a group of warriors would attack their age-old enemies, the Arapaho.
Iron Eagle gathered the warriors together and set out the next day, telling Spotted Fawn he would bring her a victory for a wedding present. It would be his greatest victory. But Spotted Fawn could not stand to see him go off to war alone, so she dressed like a warrior and rode out with the war party. She would not let him fight alone. The only one who recognized her was Four Fingers. The battle turned out to be a very difficult one for the Cheyenne. They were greatly outnumbered by the Arapaho, but Iron Eagle still felt he could win.
Then, suddenly, he noticed a strange thing. One of his warriors, who had been fatally struck by an arrow, fell from his horse and long, black hair fell from the headband. The warrior was a woman. Then Iron Eagle realized it was Spotted, Fawn. She was dead, killed by the Arapaho Chief.
Everyone seemed to realize at once what had happened. All the warriors stopped fighting, for they realized that a woman had been killed. Both sides stopped and there was silence on the battlefield. Then Iron Eagle, in revenge, sped for the Arapaho Chief.
He would get revenge for the death of this woman. But the Arapaho Chief made a deceptive move and evaded Iron Eagle and stabbed him.
Then the Arapaho Chief raised his spear over Iron Eagle and Spotted Fawn and the Cheyenne began to run. Their great Chief had been killed. Then out of the running pack came Four Fingers. He rode straight for all the Arapaho, who were lined up ready to kill the retreating Cheyenne. One man against all the Arapaho; they couldn't believe it. And when Four Fingers raised his hands in the air, all could see he had no weapons.
The Arapaho Chief sat on his horse, hypnotized by the lone warrior who would challenge the Arapaho without a weapon. Then Four Fingers knocked the Arapaho Chief off his horse and jumped on him. Four Fingers reached out with a deformed hand and touched the Arapaho Chief. He did not hurt him. He stood up, facing the Arapaho, and raised a hand straight up in front of the chief with his four fingers raised and said, "How" which means "Peace".
The Arapaho saw that he had only four fingers and they knew he was a holy man. Because of his courage, they answered him in return with "How". Since that time the Arapaho and the Cheyenne have never fought one another. And the four-finger peace sign became a sign used by all the people. And during battles, it became common practice for warriors to touch one another to show courage instead of killing each other.

The Inuit people can't be imagined without their signature parkas, fashioned from fur and hide of the local wildlife. One of the many reasons why early European voyages into the Arctic circle failed is because they were underprepared for the extreme weather conditions of the north. They wore wool clothing, which kept them hot on the inside, but made them sweat a lot, which made their clothing freeze in the extreme temperatures. The Inuit never faced this problem, as they have been making their parkas from caribou deer or seal hide from as early as 22,000 BC (Siberia). The production of these parkas took weeks, and the tradition of making them was passed down from mother to daughter, taking years to master. Depending on the geographical location of the tribes, the design of the parkas varied according to the types of animals available. Beadwork, fringes and pendants frequently decorated the clothing. Roald Amundsen was the first explorer who outfitted his crew with Inuit clothing, which enabled him to successfully circumvent the North-West Passage in 1906. In the 20th century the use of traditional Inuit clothing declined, but it has seen a recent resurgence, as the Inuit strive to preserve their culture.!

Ola Mildred Rexroat (August 28, 1917 – June 28, 2017) was the only Native American woman to serve in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP).[1][2]
Rexroat was born in Argonia, Kansas, to a Euro-American father and an Oglala mother. The family moved to South Dakota when she was young, and she spent at least part of her youth on the Pine Ridge Reservation.[3] She attended public school in Wynona, Oklahoma, for a time, and graduated from the St. Mary's Episcopal Indian School in Springfield, South Dakota, in 1932.[4] Rexroat initially enrolled in a teachers college in Chadron, Nebraska, but left before completing her degree to work for what is now the Bureau of Indian Affairs for a year.[5] She earned a bachelor's degree in art from the University of New Mexico in 1939.[4] After college, she again worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Gallup, New Mexico for a year.[5]
Rexroat next worked for engineers building airfields, where she decided to learn how to fly. In order to do so, she would need her own airplane or to join the WASPs. Selecting the latter, she moved to Washington, D.C., with her mother and sisters, and was also employed at the Army War College.[5] Rexroat then went for WASP training in Sweetwater, Texas, and was assigned the dangerous job of towing targets for aerial gunnery students at Eagle Pass Army Airfield after her graduation.[6] She also helped transport cargo and personnel. When the WASPs were disbanded in December 1944, she joined the Air Force, where she served for ten years as an air traffic controller at Kirkland Air Force Base in New Mexico during the Korean War.[2][6][7] She continued to work as an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration for 33 years after her time in the Air Force Reserves was complete.[5]
In 2007 she was inducted into the South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame.[8]
Rexroat died in June 2017 at the age of 99.[9] Immediately before her death she was the last surviving WASP in South Dakota and one of 275 living WASPs out of the original 1,074.[10] Several months after her death, the airfield operations building at Ellsworth Air Force Base was named after her.

“This is my great-grandma, Christina Levant Platt at age 100, weeding her garden. She was born into slavery. Her “owner” was a wife that taught my great grandma to read and write secretly, which was illegal and quite dangerous at that time for both of them. She learned to read the Bible.

She had 11 children, she lost two, one son was one of the first black attorneys in US. She sent the 4 boys to college in Boston. Exceptional in those days.

She passed 5yrs before I was born but I love her as if I knew her. Family tells me she would say “ I put prayers on my children’s children’s heads”.

This apparently worked💜

Around April 12, 1861, Christina was at the 1st battle of the CIVIL WAR, in Fort Sumter at Charleston Bay, South Carolina, working in the cotton fields.

She said “the sky was black as night” from cannonball fire. She saw a man decapitated by a cannonball.

She was the water girl for the other slaves as a young girl and “ the lookout” for the slaves in the fields for the approaching overseer on horseback as they secretly knelt and prayed for their freedom.

She would watch for the switching tail of the approaching horse and would alert the slaves to rise up and return to picking cotton before he saw them.

She eventually married a Native American from the Santee Tribe. John C, Platt.

After freedom, Christina insisted upon taking her children north as she knew they would not get a good education in the south, and that’s all she cared about. She died at age 101 in 1944, where she and her husband had built a home in Medfield, Massachusetts, the first black family to move there.

With great respect, I honor my great grandmother.
So much more I could say about this miraculous woman. She gave me much strength in my hard times.

Whenever I thought I was having a hard day, I would think of her and shrug it off.

Thank you for reading one story of millions. 💜 💜
