Protect your brain!

Planning to bike in the Smokies? A helmet is essential. Children under 16 are legally required to wear one in North Carolina and Tennessee, but we strongly recommend that all riders wear helmets anywhere they bike.

Please bring extra water and snacks, especially during the summer months. We recommend getting an early start to avoid the hottest temperatures. Learn more at nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/biking.htm, and enjoy your ride!

Last week, Great Smoky Mountains National Park visited the Swannanoa Valley Museum to speak about African American burials in the park. Participants learned about African American burial customs, locations, and history using primary documents such as census and slave schedule records. The park thanks the museum for allowing us to help our gateway communities learn more about their history.

Happy first day of fall! Have you noticed the changes? Do you feel it in the water? Do you feel it in the earth? Can you smell it in the air?

You may have already seen some of the differences that come with the changing of the seasons. Maybe you need to wear a sweater, or you notice some leaves are beginning to turn, or you’re a black bear now eating 20,000 calories a day in preparation for winter!

What is your favorite season in the park?

Experience one of the busiest times of the year here in Southern Appalachia: fall harvest!

The Oconaluftee Visitor Center will host the Smokies Harvest Celebration Days on October 8th and 15th. Join us from 10AM to 3PM for full Saturdays of fun! Centered on preservation of the fall harvest, this event highlights processing sorghum and apples. Using a horse or mule-powered cane mill (pictured) and wood-fired sorghum furnace, sorghum syrup is made much the same way it was generations ago.

Learn about what life was like in the mountains over a century ago by interacting with cultural demonstrators. Activities include hearth cooking, apple cider pressing, blacksmithing, folk remedies, and much more!

The event is located at The Mountain Farm Museum, which is adjacent to the park's Oconaluftee Visitor Center on US 441 in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, two miles north of Cherokee, North Carolina. For more information, call the visitor center between 9AM and 5PM Eastern Time at (828) 497-1904.

Do you ever wish you had some extra legs to help you hike? Do we have an arthropod for you!

Millipedes have numerous pairs of legs which they use to navigate the dense terrain of the forest floor. They are not picky eaters and primarily feed on dead plant material. Millipedes take to heart the outdoor ethic “Leave it better than you found it” because breaking down this plant matter enriches the soil and provides nutrients to the plants and fungi that grow there.

While having so many legs is great for millipedes, imagine how long it would take to put on that many hiking boots!

Have you seen a millipede in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? Be a citizen scientist and upload your photo to iNaturalist.org to help researchers track species within the park.

Please do not pick up millipedes or any other wildlife.
