Thinking about recreating around Polson, Montana this year? (Home to the southern end of Flathead Lake.)
Meet Polson's namesake, pioneer rancher David Polson, who was born in 1834 in New Haven, Connecticut.
The exact date he and his wife, Mary Kane, arrived in the Polson area is unknown. Rancher Billy Irvine felt it was 1865. Mary Kane was a Nez Perce Indian woman whom David met in his travels.
David Polson was said to have had a hospitable nature, and became popular among the Flathead Indians - especially important since he ranched on their reservation. He was a renowned fiddler and was in demand at all the dances and powwows - he even led an orchestra that played for dances as far away as Missoula and Frenchtown.
This photograph was taken of David Polson in 1865. He died in December 1900.
