Each year since 1996, the Whooping Crane Festival has celebrated the annual return of the cranes to their wintering habitat at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The Texas Coastal Bend is the only place where you can see the world’s last naturally occurring population of Whooping Cranes.

Throwback Thursday: This year marks the 100th anniversary of the completion of the rock structure that today is known as the south jetty in Port Aransas.
Workers in this 1908 photo were engaged in an early stage of jetty construction.
Before installation of the 'cap rocks' that can be walked upon today, the jetties had to be built up from smaller and smaller rocks down to the base. Workers put the smaller rocks in place simply by throwing them from railroad cars.
(This information and photo comes courtesy of the Port Aransas Museum, an institution full of local history. The museum is located on Alister Street at Brundrett Street and is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.)
BTW: The South Jetty also is, of course, the name of our Port Aransas newspaper!

One of my favorite places to take my daughters. We've been visiting the aquarium since they were toddlers. They're teens now and still find something new to interest them!

We’re thrilled to announce that we plan to reopen the Texas State Aquarium to our guests the week of May 18 for Phase 2 of The Governor’s Report to Open Texas. The hours of operation starting the week of May 18 will be 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, with the H-E-B Splash Park, Pepsi Shoreline Grill and Café Aqua also open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tickets for the Aquarium can be purchased onsite, or online at www.texasstateaquarium.org/tickets.
