Maine. Wooden. Historic.

We love the sea and our handcrafted, wooden vessels that sail it proudly. Two of our vessels are over 100 years old and represent some of the finest examples of Maine’s rich shipbuilding heritage.

These historic vessels can be experienced May through October aboard a public sail, lighthouse cruise, or on a private charter!

Are you looking for a venue to host a birthday party, rehearsal dinner, baby shower, or corporate event?

Ballast by Portland Schooner Co. is our boutique event space located in the heart of the historic Old Port in Portland, Maine. It is an intimate gathering space with a warm, historic touch overflowing with old world charm. The perfect place to host your curated private event, dinner, or celebration! https://www.ballastevents.com

We can accommodate groups up to 50 for a seated meal and 90-100 for a standing cocktail event. We have an on-site commercial kitchen and dining furniture available for your needs.

We also offer land and sea packages and our fleet of historic boats are available to charter to complement your reception, rehearsal dinner, or special event at Ballast!

More background on Ballast:
Ballast opened doors in 2023. Its name comes from the cobblestones lining Fore St., which some say were once used as ballasts to steady incoming vessels from across the Atlantic. The space came as a natural partner to Portland Schooner Co. A stable location on land to provide a gathering place for when the seas become too rough to sail and the weather doesn’t cooperate. It has since expanded to become a premier event space to host your gathering or event!

Our schooner Bagheera is 100 years old this year!

Bagheera was designed by famed yacht designer, John Alden. For construction, Alden turned to the rich shipbuilding heritage of Maine and found able craftsmen at Rice Brothers Shipyard in East Boothbay. In the 1920s, Bagheera sailed in the Bermuda Race at least once before being delivered to the Great Lakes, where she won the annual Chicago-Mackinac Race for several years in a row.

In her 100 years of cruising the world’s oceans, Bagheera has crossed the Atlantic, cruised areas of the Pacific, including the Galapagos, and spent many years in the Caribbean Sea. She was transported back home to Maine in 2002 as the first boat in the our fleet!

Timberwind is a 96’ two-masted schooner that was built in 1931 by Victor Cole at Union Wharf in Portland. For nearly four decades, until 1969, it was named the Portland Pilot and was responsible for meeting incoming vessels outside the harbor and piloting them to their berths. It was also briefly commandeered for service by the Coast Guard during World War II. Timberwind is certified by the US Coast Guard to carry 45 passengers on deck and is on the National Register of Historic Places. She sails daily May-October!

She was built in East Boothbay, Maine, and launched in 1912 when she took center stage in the golden era of fast, sleek ocean schooners. Inactive since the 1930s, she was thoroughly restored in the late 1980s and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Wendameen is certified by the US Coast Guard to carry 49 passengers on deck. She sails daily May-October from the Maine State Pier and is 112 years old this year!
