Have you heard of KPAP, the Killilmanjaro Porters Assistance Project?

I just got a chance to (digitally) sit down with Dash Adventures founder Dave Ashley and talk about the importance of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) and how it affects the treks he’s done as a two-time Mount Kilimanjaro Summiter and now as a tour leader. Whoever you choose to do your Kilimanjaro summit trek with, we truly hope you choose a company that is affiliated with KPAP, so that your porters and other crew are treated fairly and with respect.

As a living kidney donor, Dave knows how incredibly important health and wellness is to a life spent “Climbing Mountains and Having Fun” and that motto extends to the care and health of the Tanzanian & Kenyan nationals we are fortunate enough to work with. Without them, these trips are simply not possible, and making sure they receive fair pay, sufficient rations and rest, and are not overloaded with dangerous pack weights are simply non-negotiable items for our team.

Q: Dave, how many times have you summited Kilimanjaro?

DA: Twice as a climber, including part of the High Altitude Obstacle Course Racing World Championships in 2021 where I placed 3rd overall male and was part of a Guinness World Record for the highest obstacle course race in the world (18,000 feet inside Kilimanjaro’s crater). The championship included a summit of Kilimanjaro over 6 days, followed by an obstacle course in the crater and a race from Barafu camp (high camp) to the bottom of Kili (park entrance).

Q: Now that you are a tour leader, you’ve chosen to only work with guide companies that are affiliated with KPAP?

DA: I only use guide companies on Kili that are certified by KRTO (Kenya Responsible Tourism Organization, the non-profit that manages KPAP). KRTO ensures companies follow guidelines for fair and ethical treatment all members of the climbing team (guides, porters, camp staff). KPAP is about ensuring fair pay and working conditions for all members of the climbing party. It deters guide companies from treating their employees poorly, and encourages all climbers to consider choosing a KPAP approved company.

Q: Do you feel there is a higher level of crew provided if you join a KPAP-certified tour group?

DA: Yes, I believe fair wages and ethical conditions attract the best climbing staff!

Q: Does it add to the cost of a climb for participants?

DA: There are no fees paid to KRTO/KPAP, it’s a non-profit organization, [but the higher wages and better conditions do add cost for the guide company]. It does discourage cut rate guide companies. If you see a surprisingly low rate for a climb on Kilimanjaro, it’s very possible the company is saving money by unethical practices. Permit fees and taxes are substantial, and unavoidable. So companies can force porters to carry extremely heavy loads, reduce their food, marginalize their camp conditions, and steal tips intended to be shared with the entire team.

Q: KPAP has a provision that climbers can donate clothing and gear post-trek. Have any of the climbers with Dash Adventures done this?

DA: Yes, it’s common and encouraged. And so helpful [for the porters]

Thanks for answering some of these common questions, Dave!

If you’d like more info on the Kenya Responsible Tourism Organization and KPAP, including stories from camp porters and staff who’ve had major improvements in their working conditions by working with affiliated companies, you can check them out here: https://kiliporters.org/

Again, whoever you eventually choose to trek with, the team at Dash Adventures hopes you make the ethical choice and trek with a KPAP-affiliated organization. From an ethical and human interest standpoint, it’s the right decision to make, and because it is an ongoing issue that guide companies claim to be a partner with KPAP who aren’t, you can confirm that your chosen organization actually is certified by checking here: https://mountainexplorers.org/climb-with-a-partner-for-responsible-travel-company/

We’ll see you in the mountains!

Dash Adventures did a training day in Ireland 🇮🇪

The nation’s highest peak is Carrauntoohil, just 3,409 feet high. But the trailhead starts at around 500 feet, so it’s still a big climb.

I took the standard route from Cronin’s Yard up the rocky gulley called Devil’s Ladder. A little over 7 miles round trip.

All the way to the summit in under 1 hour 15 minutes, and my heart rate was over 190!!! 3,000 feet, that’s a lot of vertical in just 75 minutes.

Back to the bottom and complete by 2:09

Solid training workout 🏔️ 🏃

Our trip to Everest Base Camp in October is about more than just a dash to the camp and a quick photo. Our journey is 15 days, not just to allow for proper acclimatization but to allow you to take in the incredible beauty and deep heritage of this region. Dave’s previous treks have given him insight on how to pace the climb, and you’ll be trekking alongside him as you explore not only the trail but small mountain towns, remote monasteries, and secret hideaways as you climb toward your ultimate goal of EBC.

We still have space on this trek, and just $300 holds your spot! See the link in comments for signup info so you don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

It’s the season for Everest summits! Have you seen them on the news?!?

Ever want to attempt the world’s highest mountain, but don’t know where to get started?? How about now?? 😉

Dash Adventures has the perfect schedule of climbs over the next 2 years to gain the experience necessary for an attempt on the world’s highest peak in May 2026! No prior experience required.

Join us in Nepal this October for Mera Peak, a non-technical climb 21,247 feet high. This will give you experience above 20,000 feet, crampon experience, and also exposure to the Khumbu Valley where Everest lies waiting. Learn what food your body will tolerate at high elevation, and how to pace, rest, and stay hydrated above 20,000 feet. This climb requires no prior experience with high altitude or glaciers, but you will need to be fit!

Next, we travel to Ecuador in December for high altitude trekking and a climb of Cotopaxi (19,000+ ft) and Chimborazo (over 20,000 ft). Here you will rope up and climb a route with crevasse crossings, steep snow slopes and gain more glacier experience with an ice axe and crampons while roped up to a local professional guide.

In January we travel to Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the world outside of the Himalayan plateau. At nearly 23,000 feet high you’ll see how your body responds without supplemental oxygen at elevations of up to Camp 2 on Everest. This is another non-technical climb but the altitude makes it a real challenge. Again we use local guides so you can learn new and different tips for high elevation climbing.

Next it’s back to Nepal/Tibet in May 2025, this time for the 6th highest mountain in the world, Cho Oyu. Here you will gain experience using bottled oxygen with your personal Sherpa guide to climb up to nearly 27,000 feet using multiple camps and over an extended acclimitization period.

Then you’ll have a year to continue gaining experience, perhaps tackling some of the 7 summits or creating a custom climb schedule with Dash Adventures, until your attempt on Mount Everest in May 2026! 🏔️

You’ll do all of this along with me, an Everest/7 Summit climber. You’ll be getting climbing tips, high altitude advice, gear recommendations, and general trip preparation (fitness, diet, specific training) all included at no extra cost.

And speaking of cost, due to my relationships with local guide companies around the world, Dash Adventures has some of the lowest prices for a Western/Everest summiter trip leader in the world. And my time is free, I do this for fun, not to make a living 😀

Would you like to know more?? Comment below or reach out on messenger!

I’m headed to trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in September, and there is room for you to join! This is a private, small group climb that I’ll leading with a fantastic local guide company. The cost for this trip is quite low to have a Western Everest/7summit trip leader on the team, normally around $5,000 per person.

Dates: 17-26 September 2024
Route: Machame route
Trekking days: 7
Cost: $3,199

This is a luxury trek, including full board during our 7 days on the mountain, local guides, porters, an excellent chef, dining tent, sleeping tents (3 person tents for every 2 people with a large sleeping pad), and our personal toilet tents on the mountain. We’ll have an expert local guide showing us the safest and easiest way to the summit, going slowly to maximize our success and fun 😀

This is not a fast and hard climb, instead it’s suited for anybody that wants to enjoy a leisurely pace, such as taking lots of photographs on the way, and have the best acclimitzation profile for reaching the summit safely. The 7-day Machame route has the highest historical and current statistical success rates for submitting Kilimanjaro.

Interested in adding a wildlife safari or visit to the beaches of Zanzibar? We can easily make that happen before or after your climb!

You can find more details at the link below, on the Dash Adventures website at www.dashadventures.fun, or message me directly.

Who’s the “Dash” in Dash Adventures? Dave Ashley, of course!

Dave is more than just another tour leader. A retired Air Force Colonel, Dave’s life changed in 2017 when he made the choice to become a living kidney donor, to a former West Point classmate. Already an avid outdoor sport enthusiast, he became determined to show there are no limits after kidney donation, and began his seven summits quest. With the slogan, “Seven Summits, One Kidney” he both proved that such a quest was possible and ignited a passion for mountain climbing that has become Dash Adventures.

Our mantra, “Climbing Mountains, Making Friends” is the Dash experience in a nutshell. More than just an assault on a mountain, each climb becomes an experience shared by new friends in an unforgettable setting, one where sharing the local culture is just as important as the climb itself.

Climbing Kilimanjaro with Dash Adventures means you trek in a small group, with time to talk to Dave and benefit from his knowledge of climbing (as well as hear some great stories!) and your camps each night are a chance to rest and bond with your trekmates. Dave’s experience means safety is prioritized, and there are GPS trackers for all climbers – which means your loved ones can watch from home! – and bottled oxygen is available for immediate use in case of oxygen sickness at no extra charge.

Part of the Dash Adventures ethos is responsible touring, and so we are proud members of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, which ensures proper wages, safety, and treatment for all our porters and camp crew. It’s extremely important to Dave that the Tanzanian nationals who work beside us on these trips are treated fairly and with respect for the work they do. These trips would never be possible without them.

Join us for an unforgettable 10-day journey, Sept 17th – 26th, and stand beside Dave as you touch the Roof of Africa.

More trip info and registration is at the link below! Just $300 holds your place on this trek, which is limited to 10 participants.

Our Everest Base Camp Trek is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For 15 days you will soak up the incredible culture of Nepal and the stunning views that make up this journey.

Days 1-3 are for flying into Nepal, resting and adjusting to the time change and altitude, final gear checks and the short flight to Lukla and our trek to Phakding, our true starting point. Kathmandu is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you’ll have a full day to explore before we begin our in-country travel.

Day 4 & 5 You’ll trek over the Dudhkohshi River before overnighting in the town of Namche Bazaar, where you can get any final necessities and stay in a local teahouse. You’ll have 2 days (with an optional day hike to help acclimatize) in Namche, because the rest and recovery is so critical to the hike.

Day 6 takes you to Tengboche Monastery, where you’ll spend the night at a teahouse and maybe even see the Lamas perform a traditional ceremony at the Monastery.

Day 7 & 8 are two extremely important acclimatization days, so you’ll spend both in Dingboche doing shorter day hikes to make sure you are adequately prepared for the rest of the trek. Dingboche is a great place to recover, as there are a few cafes and shops and you can visit them while you focus on your rest.

On Day 9 our hike is flat but turns more serious, as we’ll be getting into rockier terrain and avoiding livestock. The trek will pass the memorials for climbers lost in summit attempts, bringing with it a moment for reflection and appreciation for the difficult terrain and the Sherpas who work on it every season.

Day 10: Base Camp! Since we do this trip in the fall, your time at the camp won’t be as overcrowded as it is in spring, when the majority of Summit climbers are present. Take photos and savor your accomplishment before we head down to Grorek Shep for the night.

Days 11-15 are enjoying your safe descent, with an optional climb to Kala Pattar, the actual highest point of the trek and a great view of Everest on Day 11.

More trip details and registration are at the link in comments! Just $300 deposit saves your spot on this incredible trip.

Summiting Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is one of Africa’s most extraordinary experiences, and now you can join Dash Adventures as they trek the famed Machame Route from Kilimanjaro National Park to the Uhuru Peak and the roof of Africa.

Your ten-day trip begins when you land in Tanzania and meet your fellow trekkers. After a day to recover and check all your gear, the experienced team at Dash Adventures and their support team will have you ready to trek to the Machame Camp for your first overnight.

As exit the rain forest, your first peak will be on Day 4, at Shira Cave Camp. Dave will trek alongside you as the group begins the acclimatization process, marveling at the Shira Plateau as it sprawls across your view and doing your required afternoon trek to Lava Tower.

Day 5 returns you to Lava Tower and a longer acclimatization stop as you eat lunch, before descending to Barranco Camp to camp overnight. You’ll get some lower-altitude recovery as you marvel at the Barranco Wall, which makes up part of tomorrow’s trek!

Day 6 begins early with the Barranco Wall – despite the steep terrain, it is a relatively easy trek, and you’ll be rewarded at the top by incredible views of Kibo Peak. Our experienced support team will then lead you to Barafu Camp, setting the pace for individual trekkers, before returning to Karanga Camp for the night.

Our Day 7 trek is where the ascent truly begins. Based on Dash’s experience with this trek, we’ve chosen to send part of our team ahead to set up camp at Barafu Camp, so that our group’s focus can be on reaching Barafu, resting briefly, and then doing the required acclimatization trek to Kosovo Camp. Once you reach Kosovo you will return to Barafu and be welcomed by our support team so you can rest and recover for summit trek the next day.

At midnight on Day 8, your summit trek begins. You’ll gain another 4,000 feet in altitude as you work your way towards Uhuru Peak, so you’ll be put in groups of two, with a personal guide assigned to each pair, to monitor your condition for the entire summit trek. At 19,340 feet you will stand at the iconic Uhuru Peak sign, take photos and have the opportunity to walk to the nearest glacier before beginning your descent to Baranco Camp and a well-deserved rest.

Just $300 reserves your chance to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime trek. Registration is at the link in the comments!

Whether you are on a larger trip to Africa or beginning your seven summits journey, the Dash Adventures team is ready to make this dream come true for you in September.

Don’t forget to follow this page and our IG and X feeds to stay up to date on all our trips! We have more 2024 trips being released soon and you can keep tabs on all our events by following our social channels. on both platforms.

Headed out on another training event weekend! This time meeting up with clients from last fall’s Nepal EBC trek and Island Peak climb, Shane Skopak and Brennan Decima.

Dash Adventures scored a 4 person permit for California’s Mount Whitney, so Shelley Johannesen and Dave Ashley are leading our new friends on a snowy condition summit attempt at no charge.

Dash Adventures offers the opportunity to join us in US-based training events for free to our clients and friends.

Our next offering is Montana’s Granite Peak, a technical and nearly 30 mile round trip backcountry trek to the highest point in Montana in late June. Stephen Palazzo, who joined us in Ecoador last November, is already joining us on that trip and we have room for one more. If you are a Dash Adventures client and would like to know more about Montana or other no-cost US-based opportunities, please message us!

And check out our website for all upcoming trips. Everest base camp, Kilimanjaro, Mera peak, three passes are all live!

05/06/2024

A true once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list adventure, our Everest Base Camp trek is an unforgettable opportunity to experience not only the trek to EBC itself, but to immerse yourself in the extraordinary Buddhist culture of Nepal and the lives of the residents of Kathmandu. From October 1st through the 15th, allow us to show you the true magic of Nepal and the Himalayan experience.

For this trip, Dash Adventures partners with Expedition Himalaya, one of the most experienced expedition leaders in the region, so that all of the trip details, Sherpa guides, climbing permits, and accommodations are vetted and ready for your 15-day trip. We limit our group to 10 participants so that Dave has hands-on time with everyone, and so our team can focus on getting to know everyone from the welcome dinner to the moment you depart for Base Camp.

The best part? This is a non-technical trek, so no previous mountaineering experience is necessary. However, participants should be able to hike over uneven terrain for 6-8 hours per day, including stairs, steep inclines, and in slippery conditions such as rain and snow. It is the Himalayas, after all!

As always, we offer the option to reserve your spot on this trek for a $300 deposit. The final trip for the 15-day experience is $2,599, and you can download a brochure detailing all aspects of the trip at the link below. If you are interested in the add-on trips of Island Peak or Lobuche East, you can find that information at the link as well. These add-ons are subject to minimum registration limits – we must have two or more participants in order to offer the trek.

Considering our Iceland trek of Laugavegur in August? Our trek through the southern region is five days immersed in some of the most incredible landscapes on the planet, as you walk through a world shaped by ancient geothermic forces, dwarfed by the vast blue skies overhead.

Your trip begins with Dave and Shelley on a specially-designed bus that takes you from Reykjavik to the trailhead, built to ford glacial streams and cover the rough terrain. You’ll pass the famous “Gateway to Hell”, the Heckla volcano, to get you in the mood for the trail ahead!

On day two, you’ll enter the breathtaking obsidian desert of Hrafntinnusker, explore smoldering hot springs, and you’ll tackle your first mountain stream crossing as you reach the camp site for the day.

Day three brings you into true volcano country, trekking past the Stórasúla and Hattafell volcanoes, catch your first views of mountain glaciers, and see the stunning Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon.

Your fourth day brings even better glacier views, and Mount Einhyrningur, also known as the Unicorn Mountain. By the end of the day you’ll leave the glaciers behind, and suddenly be surrounded by Thorsmork’s dense birch forests, letting you know you’ve nearly conquered the entire Laugavegur trail!

Our fifth day is built into the trip for weather contingency, and if we don’t use it on the trail, Dave and Shelley can show you additional hiking trails in the area, and (maybe even more exciting) a place to take a hot shower before returning to Reykjavik.

Just $250 secures your place on this awe-inspiring journey. Only two spots remain!

For a very limited time, I am offering to lead a trip to Havasu Falls! I’ll help you pack the right gear and food, pick out a great campsite, and show you the waterfalls and the confluence where clear water meets the muddy Colorado river. There are options to hike in with all of your gear, use pack animals, or even helicopter (depending on space available).

The catch: I am only available from 7-16 April, and again from 23 April through 6 May. Also, since the 2024 permit lottery is over I can only get access to permits from groups that cancel their reservations. So availability of those permits changes every day.

Reach out to me today for best chance to book!!

Trip price is cost of total group expenses (yours and mine) plus a trip coordination/leader fee. I can even pick you up from Phoenix airport (PHX) for groups up to 4.

All permits are for 4 days/3 nights camping and the Havasupai tribe charges $455 per person. Yes it’s expensive I thought, but WOW was it worth it!

Don’t miss out…these permits are very difficult to get and require full payment up front to secure.
