I’m at PDX right now. Watching a woman beg and cry to be let on a plane that the jet way had already been pulled. (She did not get on) Let’s unpack:
1) She arrived at the airport ONE hour before her domestic flight (minimum of TWO hours recommended for domestic, 3-4 for international)
2) She got held up at TSA for a pat down due to her metal implant. Furious that TSA “deliberately” took someone else to pat down before her (unknown random clears take less time than internal metal parts screenings…not fair but it is what it is) allow EXTRA time if you have this as a known issue
3) She stopped to use the restroom on the way to the gate…assuming 8:16 flight she could board until 8:16. Ummm…no. The door closes for the flight 10-20 minutes prior. They paged the woman several times.
4) She assumed they could open the door and let her on if they haven’t taken off. Wrong. After the official statement of the boarding doors closed, control for the flight and all the passengers is transferred to the tower, and the manifest is sealed so to speak. To change any passengers on board, the flight requires several steps, including contacting the receiving airport, the tower, management,… It’s a big deal. It’s only used in very rare occasions, such as a passenger suddenly being taken seriously ill before the plane gets off the ground, things like that. They cannot do it to accommodate a late passenger, generally, no matter how important it is to the passenger to get on the flight, because of the delays and issues it causes. Not to mention that it would soon become the norm that every single flight people would arrive late because they now know that the plane would let them board anyway.
5) She made no attempt to problem solve. Thank Heaven for a well trained and empathetic gate agent. She de-escalated the situation and immediately worked on reaccomodation, even walking the guest to the next gate where she could stand by to get on.

Lesson: Get there earlier than you think you need to. Take a nap or play on your phone while you congratulate yourself for minimizing stress. If you have a problem with a flight, your first best line of defense is to stay at the gate to see what reaccomodation can be offered. Second line of defense is to head for the ticket counter or information counter for that airline, all the while looking up potential flight alternatives, and contacting any emergency numbers that you have have been given for these situations. The quickest and best way to solve problems is to remain at the airport until you know what is going to happen next.

This is our lesson for today. I’m now headed for the airline customer service website to give kudos to Tasha, whose amazing handling of the situation should be immortalized in a training video for every CSA.
