There are over 3600 miles of forest roads and trail-like forest service roads, and over 600 miles of designated trails in the Black Hills National Forest. The designated trails in South Dakota are 62” and the designated trails in Wyoming are 50” trails.

If you are riding from the Hill City area North on the China Gulch part of the Gold Mountain China Gulch drive, the non-width restricted trail-like trail 669.1a is one of a number of 82” trails.

The Civilian Conservation Corp was active in this area. An old 1935 CCC truck can be viewed. Other markers are available to read and buildings to visit.

The Hell Canyon area trails are non-width restricted trails that can be open or tree-lined. If trails are wet and muddy in other areas of the Black Hills, these limestone paved trails can be dry and interesting to ride.

The Elk Mountain 82” non-width restricted drive is framed by the results of a 2001, 21,000 acre forest fire that took most of the trees. But the trails are still there; open all year-around. And still there, is the wide-open scenery!

A favorite destination for some is the memorial flag in this area is called the Piedmont Flagpole. Some ghost towns with no evidence remaining are the Carwye Ghost Town and the Repass Ghost Town.

The Battle Creek ride gives you access to ghost mines and towns, an old historic cabin, some great 82” non-width restricted trails.

The Hawkwright area provides a mass of trails for machines that are 62″ in width or less. However, the area is surrounded by numerous trail-like forest service roads for those machines over the 62” width restriction.

The Boxelder Creek Bridge Water Crossing is a favorite destination for those machines 62″ and less.
62” trail 8214 Riley Trailhead area Black Hills National Forest South Dakota
Trail 8214 is one of many 62” width-restricted trails of the Riley Hill trailhead and Merritt 62” Trail System area. Not to be dismayed, there is also a great 82” non-width restricted Forest Service road drive in the Riley Hill area.
