Yesterday, my client and good friend Dick Kiene landed a 30" wild rainbow on the fly. I actually measured it twice to make sure. It was his biggest trout to date and the biggest trout I've see landed in that area.

All the jokes around his name and the size of the fish were hilarious!... By the end of the day my face hurt from laughing!

We landed another PIG today. This one measured 24". It's awesome to see fish like these, especially on back to back days.

Taking on 14 high school students for four days on the Trinity River is a tall order for any two guides. Especially when most of them have never fly fished before. But, with a lot of coaching and a lot of focus from the students, the trip was a success and fun for everyone! A BIG thanks to Sonoma Academy, Brandon Spars and everyone involved that helped put this trip together! This was one of the most determined and well mannered group of kids that I've fished with. Icy rods didn't faze anyone! I'm already looking forward to next year!

Has anyone else noticed that the hooks from certain major fly companies seem to be getting weaker? It's almost like the flies are being tied on thinner wired hooks so that more are either bent or broken and, in turn, more are sold. Both of these hooks broke or bent with a fish on. Loosing the fish is one thing but spending $2.50 per fly that is only good for one fish or one rock is ridiculous! These hooks should not bend or break this often! Bring the thick wired hooks back that these flies used to be tied on!!
