Ever heard of dragons at the beach? No, seriously!

The Blue Sea Dragon (Glaucus atlanticus) has been spotted washing up on the Outer Banks. This venomous sea slug lives in the open ocean and occasionally gets stranded on dry land following strong winds. They may only grow to about an inch long, but don't let their size fool you. They pack a punch!

As they move through ocean currents, they snack on their main meal of choice: the Portuguese man o' war. Because their meals consist of such a venomous creature, they are capable of storing that venom for their own defense. They concentrate that ingested venom and deliver a sting that is even more powerful! Talk about a fiery bite for such a small dragon!

If you come across one of these blue beauties, admire it from a safe distance and be cautious of more nearby. Blue Sea Dragons can travel in groups known as "Blue Fleets". If they are discovered, dead or alive, they remain venomous. Please enjoy this fascinating organism without touching.

Now, here's the real question: Would you rather face a fire-breathing dragon or a venomous sea dragon? Tell us your choice!

Digging holes at the beach = a hidden danger!
It might seem like harmless fun, but digging holes in the sand can quickly turn dangerous.

โš ๏ธ Every year, tragic accidents happen when sand holes collapse, trapping children and adults.
๐ŸŠ Large, hidden holes also slow down lifeguards and ocean rescue teams when every second counts.
๐Ÿข During nesting season (May-Sept.), these holes become deadly obstacles for sea turtles and their hatchlings making their way to the ocean.

Safety Tips:
Keep holes shallowโ€”no deeper than knee height.
Always fill them in before you leave the beach.

The sea turtles are hatching! We've already had many baby turtles make their first trip out to sea and over the next month, hundreds more will follow. Be sure to respect barriers put up around sea turtle nests along the beaches.

๐Ÿš— Although night driving begins today, some routes may be temporarily closed if there is a specific need for sea turtle protection. All closures are clearly signed.

Check beach and route status here: https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/conditions.htm
