Wondering what all the talk of tea is about? Well look no further. πŸ«–

This month is the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. This rebellious act of dumping tea into Boston Harbor began with the Townshend Acts of 1767 which taxed specific goods coming into the colonies such as paint, lead, paper, glass, and tea. The Townshend Acts were repealed in 1770, although the tax on tea remained. The final straw for the colonies was the Tea Act of 1773. This was the driving force behind the destruction of tea by the Sons of Liberty on December 16, 1773, later known as the Boston Tea Party. Following that night, boycotting of British teas became widespread across the colonies, with American colonists finding alternatives or just going without for the sake of liberty.

Ironically, only a few years prior in 1766 as the Stamp Act was repealed by the King and Parliament, British manufacturers produced "No Stamp Act" tea pots to sell to the colonists as a trophy for their victory. These tea pots were not in use for long, however, as the boycott on tea was soon to follow.

Interested in learning more about the politics of tea? Or maybe youu are curious about what kinds of tea the colonists were drinking? Stop by the Kitchen at Historic Kenmore on Sunday December 17 from 12pm to 4pm to discuss the Boston Tea Party, its causes, and its effects. We will also have samples of the five teas thrown into the harbor that night for you to try yourself.

Entrance to the kitchen is included with regular admission to Historic Kenmore. For more information, visit our website at: https://kenmore.org/events/.
