To my African friends,

I know you are confused about America re-electing a racist: A man who says Africa is a place of “sh*thole” nations and wants less of her people in America and more immigrants from Norway. A man who banned Muslims from entering the USA during his first presidency. A man whose company refused to rent apartments to black people. A man who denies that Barack Obama is American.

My friends, I love how much you love America and its promise. I understand why it shocks and hurts you that America has made this choice a second time. I wish I could say something to ease your pain and the pain so many decent Americans are also feeling right now.

I am sorry.

I ask you to consider that the United States is a vast, diverse country, home to 335 million people. About 75.5 million voted for him, representing only 22% of our population. In other words, his election doesn't capture the true spirit of the United States. Most of us reject racism and believe in the inherent worth of every individual.

When Americans travel to Africa, we are inspired by your unique wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and the warm spirit of your people. We believe deeply in every individual's inherent dignity and worth, regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion. We approach you with respect, open hearts, an appreciation for diversity, and a genuine desire to understand your perspective.

The kindness and hospitality you show us fill our hearts, and we leave with admiration and a strong desire to return. We are decent human beings who cherish our shared humanity, and I hope this message conveys the respect and admiration that many Americans hold for Africa and its people.

I feel sad and ashamed that we have done this again. However, I want you to know that many of us in America stand in solidarity with you and anyone who shares the values of kindness and respect. We will continue embracing diversity's beauty and unite in our shared humanity.
