The Christmas holiday begins with St. Nicholas Day on December 6, follower by the 8th. Then of course the 24th, 25th & 26th. It doesn’t end until 6January. Here’s why.

In Italy, the Christmas season extends to January 6th with the celebration of La Befana, a kind-hearted witch who delivers gifts. According to legend, Befana was invited by the Wise Men to visit baby Jesus but got lost and never found him. Now, she flies on her broomstick each year, leaving sweets for good children and coal for the naughty ones. This beloved tradition marks the Epiphany and the end of the festive season.

Happy St. Nicholas Day. It’s the beginning of Christmas in Italy.

Today we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Nicholas, one of Italy’s most beloved saints! 🎉🇮🇹 Known for his generosity and kindness, St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children, sailors, and merchants. In Italy, this special day is marked with festive traditions, particularly in regions like Bari, where St. Nicholas’ relics are kept in a grand basilica. Pilgrims from all over the world gather to honor his legacy and pay homage to his spirit of giving.

In many Italian towns, children eagerly anticipate the visit of "La Fata di San Nicola," or "St. Nicholas' Fairy," who leaves small gifts like sweets and toys in their shoes, much like the Santa Claus tradition. In the northern regions, some people also enjoy traditional St. Nicholas pastries, like the "Panettone" (rich fruitcake) or “Struffoli” (honey-soaked fried dough balls), which are shared in family gatherings.

St. Nicholas' Feast Day is not just about gifts—it’s a celebration of compassion, charity, and community, bringing families together to reflect on the true meaning of giving.
