Mpala Jena, Zimbabwe 📍 P&H Top 8 Best Safari’s in Africa 🌍

Mpala Jena is an intimate luxury safari camp situated along the scenic banks of the Zambezi River within Zimbabwe’s Zambezi National Park. The camp embodies “barefoot luxury,” featuring thatched roofs and canvas tents that blend natural elements with modern comfort.

Mpala Jena is home to a wide range of wildlife that can be enjoyed on safari drives, seen from the Zambezi River on a boat cruise or drifting under a sail in a wooden Dhow, on walking trails or while sipping cocktails from the camp’s swing chairs. There are more lions per square km here than in any other park in Zimbabwe.

A picture tells a thousand words. Taken by our talented client Jeff Elzemeyer, on his arrival to Xigera Lodge, Botswana.

Our founder drew the following conclusions:

“This incredible shot! That old man has got a lot of stories written on his face. The base of the horn does not speak to a particularly old rhino but the ears, eyes and skin tell a different story. Judging from the recent wound on his face, my guess is that he is an older bull that has been beaten up by another bull, or perhaps more likely, a female with a younger calf who was “testing” him and he gave up and moved out of the territory temporarily. I had a rhino called Brutalis who I knew well and he was always battling with the females and one actually ended up killing him. I have seen more white rhino bulls wounded by females than by males.”

At Piper & Heath, Rhino conservation is not just a cause—it’s a deeply personal mission, rooted in our heritage and close to our hearts.

Our founder, Chris Liebenberg, began his journey by darting and relocating rhinos to safeguard their future, playing a hands-on role in the fight to protect these magnificent animals.

Though Chris may no longer be on the front lines in Africa, Piper & Heath remains steadfast in our commitment to conservation, supporting vital efforts to preserve these majestic creatures.

We’re proud to partner with a number of conservation-focused camps, where guests can witness rhinos in their natural habitats, all while knowing that their travel helps drive crucial conservation efforts.

Southern Africa is grappling with a severe drought, and Zimbabwe is among the hardest hit. The 2024 crop failure has led to critical food shortages, leaving communities in
desperate need.

The children in Nyaminyami District in Matusadona National Park are vulnerable.

We’ve partnered with African Parks network to launch a campaign providing daily nutritious meals to these children. Our goal is to reach all 2,700 primary school kids in the district.

Romance in the Kalahari 📍 San Camp, Botswana

Imagine a smattering of billowing white tents, shaded by desert palms and surrounded by a thousand acres of shimmering, sparkling nothingness. You’ve just dreamt up San Camp, a seven-bedroom oasis on the edge of the Nwetwe Pan in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi.

San isn’t a place for frills and fluffiness. The magic is in the minimalism, both at the camp and in the mysterious desert landscape. You can forget the tourist crowds and over-stuffed 4x4s too; it’s just you, the wildlife, and a handful of local San Bushmen, waiting to share their secrets with you.

Of all the Makgadikgadi pans, we think Nwetwe is the most iconic. Meerkats pop up from the desert dust, brown hyaena hide in the grass, and you’ll see red hartebeest, springbok and gemsbok scurrying between them.

But San Camp isn’t just about wildlife-watching – it’s about the atmosphere and the ethereal surroundings. Disappear into a remote world, where the 360-degree panoramas are so vast, you can see the curvature of the earth.

Meet the Okapi: Nature's Best Kept Secret!

Ever heard of a giraffe with zebra stripes? 🦓 Meet the Okapi, the mysterious and rare "forest giraffe" of Africa! With its long neck, chocolate-brown coat, and zebra-like legs, this elusive creature looks like it stepped right out of a fairytale. But unlike its savannah cousins, the Okapi prefers the quiet life in the dense rainforests of the Congo, where it was hidden from the world until the early 20th century!

🔍 Fun Fact: The Okapi’s tongue is so long, it can lick its own ears! Talk about a cool party trick! 😜

The Okapi might be shy, but it’s one of Africa’s most unique treasures, reminding us that sometimes the most incredible wonders are hidden in plain sight.

Honoring the Himba Tribe of Namibia

The Himba people, living in Namibia's Kunene region, are known for their unique traditions and deep connection to the land. Their red ochre skin, intricate hairstyles, and simple way of life reflect a culture that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

Visiting the Himba is a chance to learn about their world, listen to their stories, and understand a way of life that’s deeply rooted in tradition. At Piper & Heath, we believe that every safari should include moments like these—where you connect with the people who make Africa truly special.

Travel with respect, learn with an open heart, and leave with memories that honor the people and places you visit.
