Installed some evo gold frets, made a brass nut from scratch, and got the guitar strung up. Gonna let the neck settle under string tension for a bit before finalizing the fretwork. For some pieces of wood that literally came out of the garbage, this instrument is turning out to be pretty flashy! @ New Orleans, Louisiana

Rough carving a neck by hand is the sweatiest part of this gig. I like to do the bulk material removal, then let the neck sit overnight before cutting the radius into the fretboard to give the wood a chance to spring and settle. Once the fretboard is shaped I’ll let it settle again before doing the final neck shaping.

Just scored this piece of salvaged old-growth longleaf pine from a renovation site on Canal and Royal at the edge of the French Quarter. This was a section of a girder in a 4-story storehouse built in 1845-46. There’s at least one guitar body, maybe two, in this thing.

Whenever we glue a fretboard onto a neck billet we always cover the truss rod with a piece of matte scotch tape and cut it about 1/16” around the cavity so no glue can get in there, but there’s still plenty of surface area for the glue joint. Also notice the steel brad registration pins to ensure the fretboard can’t slip once it’s clamped up.

Making a neck billet out of an old-growth Long Leaf Pine floorboard from a 150-year-old New Orleans home. This quarter-sawn heartwood pine is very strong stuff. It’s completely different than Yellow Pine 2x4s used for modern construction. Along with the quarter-sawn Purple Heart stringers, this should be a very stable neck.
