This week is National Hand Washing Awareness Week. As we all know, frequent hand-washing is one of the best way to avoid getting sick and spreading illness. Here is a friendly reminder of how to properly wash your hands:

1. Wet hands with clean, running water.
2. Apply soap, lather well and rub hands together for at least 20 seconds.
3. Scrub all surfaces, including back of hands, wrists, between fingers and under fingernails.
4. Rinse well.
5. Dry hands with a clean towel.

Did you know that November 1967 marks the first meeting between AT&T and the FCC to establish a universal number that was to be used in case of emergency? After the urging of the National Association of Fire Chiefs in 1957 and subsequent meeting, 10 years later, AT&T announced 9-1-1 as the emergency code for the United States. At the time, 9-1-1 was chosen due to the speed at which it could be dialed on a rotary phone and that it had never been used as an area code, service code or office code. The first 9-1-1 call was made in 1968 by Alabama Senator Rankin Fite to U.S. Representative Tom Bevill as a test. AT&T first implemented 9-1-1 in Huntington, Indiana on March 1, 1968. Although the roll-out took many years, by 1979, 26% of the US could dial the number. This increased to 50% by 1987 and to 93% by 2000. By March 2022, 98.9% of the US had access to 9-1-1. Today, 9-1-1 is the standard emergency number for the United States, Canada, Mexico, Philippines, Argentina, Panama, Palau, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Saint Martin, Fiji, Jordan, Iraq and Pakistan. The idea of a national emergency telephone number originated in the United Kingdom in 1937, using the number 999, which is still in use today.

Today is National Seat Belt Day. The first modern three-point seat belt was patented in 1955 by Roger Griswold and Hugh DeHaven and was offered by Ford as an option in their vehicles that same year. At first, seat belts were met with much resistance, with only 2% of Ford buyers opting for seat belts into 1956. In 1958, Saab introduced seat belts as standard equipment, making the practice commonplace. However, it wasn't until 1968 that the federal government required seat belts to be installed in all new passenger vehicles. Data from 1975 to 2017 shows seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injuries by 45% and moderate to critical injury by 50%. This data set is true for all vehicle occupants, which means seat belts are as equally important and effective for rear passengers as they are for front passengers. So next time you get into a car, remember to buckle up no matter where you are sitting. Seat belts save lives!

This Sunday marks the end of Daylight Savings Time, which means it's time to turn our clocks back an hour! "Spring forward, Fall back" is followed by both America and Canada, except for the states of Arizona and Hawaii. Daylight Savings Time (DST) starts on the second Sunday of March @ 2:00am and ends on the first Sunday of November @ 2:00am, running for approximately 65% of the year. Although DST gives us longer days with the sun setting later in the evening, most people favor staying in Standard Time permanently. Which would you prefer as a permanent option, DST or Standard? As Halloween approaches, it is important to think about keeping children and everyone "trick-or-treating" safe! Here are 10 safety tips to help you keep safe on Halloween night:

1. Try to avoid costumes that hinder movement.
2. Travel in groups.
3. Use flashlights & glow sticks for visibility.
4. Stay on sidewalks when walking.
5. Look both ways before crossing the street.
6. Only approach well-light houses.
7. Avoid strange neighborhoods.
8. Accept treats at the door - do not go inside.
9. Examine all treats before eating.
10. Avoid eating "homemade" treats.

1. Whether it's a fireplace, wood stove, furnace or electric heater, make sure your heating source is well maintained and serviced regularly.
2. Don't store combustible items near your heating source.
3. Make sure draperies and furniture are kept far enough away from heating sources.
4. Don't forget to extinguish candles before leaving your home or going to bed.
5. Keep fire extinguishers easily accessible and in high-risk areas.
