Traveling during the holidays doesn't have to mean spending a ton of money.

Ever wonder how far in advance you should start looking for the best flight deals?

According to many surveys, on average it should be no less than 64 days prior to departure. Especially when it comes to Domestic flights within the US.

With domestic flights, seasonality is a big factor. Most frequent travelers polled, said that you shouldn’t book flights less than:

67 days prior to Summer vacations
94 days prior to Winter
84 days prior to Spring
89 days prior to Fall

When it comes to international, the general consensus is no less than 60+ days applies the same as domestic. However, there is one exception.

European travelers highly recommend booking no less than 180 days in advance. *best times in November

Mexico, no less than 60 days. Especially when Holidays are approaching….

And…the exception…. Maybe it’s the island mentality… With the Caribbean, it is actually recommended that you look for deals less than 60 days in advance.

Recently, Iceland has opened for international travel to those who have a ‘certificate of vaccination.’

If you possess such a certificate, be the perfect time to visit while the large crowds do not exist!

Pictured below is a CDC card that some receive when a vaccine is administered.

Upon review on Iceland’s website, it seems to meet criteria for acceptance:

However, I would check with the airline to see if this is sufficient. A quick check on Iceland Air, I didn’t see any information.

Ever want to know what it’s like to live like a Hobbit?!

This Airbnb (pictured) is inspired right out of the Lord of The Rings, and you can experience the Hobbit life while overlooking the Columbia River.

But at 400 a night (plus fees) it can be a little too steep and you may need to hock your own rings to stay awhile!

However, don’t fret or give up your dream of temporarily living like a real Hobbit! This isn’t the only Hobbit house that exists in the world. In fact, at about 120 USD you can go to Ireland and stay at this one (also has a hot tub):

There are also several options located in various places:

Have you ever heard of Argèles-sur-Mer, Languedoc?

It is located in southern France, about a little over 2 hour drive (or train ride!) north of Barcelona, Spain.

The town is wedged between the Pyrenees and Mediterranean mountains, and has one of the cleanest beaches in the world. It is rich in 7th century structures and Catalan architecture. Tons to do and see!

Planning on going? Here are some links and info to get you started (or inspired!)

One of the best ways of saving money on travel are with credit cards that earn miles or cash back on purchases. However, what concerns most people with credit are accrued debts with high interest rates.

This last year I financed a vacation using two reward cards. The first card was a Capital One Venture, where if you spent $3000 within the first three months, you received 60,000 miles and earned 2 miles for every dollar spent. The second card is a Wells Fargo Cash Wise card, spend $500 within the first 3 months, receive 150 cash reward bonus and earn 1.5% cash back on all purchases.

The Capital One card has a variable interest rate between 14-17%. The Wells Fargo card has a 0% locked interest rate for 15 months.

So basically, I made all of my vacation purchases and moved most of my automatic payments (ex car insurance monthly premiums) to the Capital One, then transferred that balance to the Wells Fargo card.

I then set up my own payment plan with the 0% interest card. Laid out a plan to pay off the entirety of the trip in less than 12 months!!

Now, I have to figure out where I will go this year! Between the two cards, I have over 85,000 miles on one and nearly $500 cash rewards on the other.

When I travel, one of the things that I enjoy doing is tasting the local coffee!

Depending where you go, the diversity of what you are drinking can change due to combinations of bean species, climate and methods of harvesting. Processes of roasting and brewing also play a major role, as well as what may be added that make it unique to the area.

When I was in Panama last year, I did a tasting of the Geisha coffee (pictured below), this coffee’s brewing process is similar to tea. I understand in Vienna, Austria chocolate dust or cinnamon is added, as well as complimented with a side of mineral water. And some of you may be familiar with Kopi Luwak, where the beans are harvested from Civet P**p!

Checked baggage fees are beginning to become the norm for most carriers.

The average cost per airline is about 30 (US) dollars per checked bag. With airlines constantly losing revenue, you can expect these fees to go up. Some airlines have even started charging fees for bags you bring on board with you.

It is safe to say that in most cases that you will need to budget at least another 30-50 dollars per ticket.

Currently, there are only a few domestic and International Airlines that do NOT (currently) charge for checked bags.

Domestic:

Southwest Airlines, lets you check 2 bags for free no matter what class of ticket purchased.

Hawaiian Airlines, no bag fees for international flights only.

International Airlines:

Air France, Air New Zealand, Emirates and Korean Air.

For a full list of fees per airline, this is a great website that updates the current prices for checked bags:
