Doing arts and crafts around the world as you travel is a phenomenal way for kids (and parents!) to engage with locals, learn about a culture, and just slow down for a moment. Kids are focused and creating-- and it's just a very different energy from when they're out and about.
As a mom, when I travel with my kids, I look for cultural craft activities on various sites and have had great experiences:
- https://www.airbnb.com/s/experiences (even if we're not booking accommodation w/ airbnb)
- https://www.tripadvisor.com/ --> "Things to do"
-.https://www.getyourguide.com/ find the filter for "workshop or class" in your destination
- https://www.viator.com/ --> find the filter for "Classes & workshops" (and sometimes "arts & culture")
- https://www.expedia.com/things-to-do and then search for "class" or "workshop"
- if you already know the type of creative activity you'd like to do, you can also google search and see what comes up :), like "jewelry- making class, Grand Bazaar Istanbul" -- you'll get some that are on the above branded sites, but you'll also get some independent ones :)!

It's important for us that kids (and parents!) learn about the cultures in the countries we visit... and it's pretty awesome when we can combine that with creativity, nature, and releasing a LOT of kid energy! These kids were super pumped to personalize their kites (which are very important in Guatemalan culture) and then run around for a crazy long time trying to figure out how to fly them. SO. MUCH. FUN!

We love getting kids and parents out in nature...and this day we hiked up to "roast" marshmallows on the volcano Pacaya. Marshmallows are amazing motivation for kids :). The lava on Pacaya actually stopped in 2021, but there are still thermal heat vents, so everyone more "steamed" their marshmallows than actually "roasted" them, but there were no complaints :)!
