Because a headshot is such a close image of your face to juyst below your collar bone, every slight tilt of your head, minor change of body position, the tiny adjustment you might make with your brow, and more can completely change the way people interpret you as a person and as a professional. That’s why it’s important to select a photographer that understands these nuances and knows exactly who your intended audience is.

I spend a good amount of my time with each subject not only coaching body positions but expressions as well. All these little details are what add up to a collection of great headshots that will attract more attention to you and your business.

I spent part of this morning presenting to 1 Million Cups Seattle about the business advantages and benefits gained by having professionally created consistent headshots on social media, websites, and marketing/sales collateral. Aimed at both individuals and organizations, the presentation spoke to the importance of creating a professional appearance, insuring your team visually stays on brand, gaining the immediate trust of your target market, exactly what makes a great headshot, and more. (Please don’t mind the camera turning the screen green!)

BTW, I really enjoy doing these presentations. If you’re in the Seattle area and interested in having me present for a lunch and learn, to a business organization, or a group of interested people, let me know and we can set it up.

I spent part of today at Novostone, manufacturers of premium quartz counter tops, in Seattle discussing plans to setup an area to photograph the large slaps that arrive to be shown on their website, social media, and marketing collateral. Issues we discussed included lighting, dealing with all the reflections from the surrounding environment, color temperature, monitor calibration, post production…everything they need to consider to have top-notch photography assets ready to be shown to the clients and contractors they’ll be marketing to.
Pictured in there showroom are co-founder Emma Tang, Christopher Davies who does their marketing and procurement, and yours truly.

What’s the most important element of my business? Customer experience. Period. That my clients feel respected, understood, valued, and appreciated from first contact through follow-up after the job is done.

Being a photographer, a great customer experience is incredibly important. Most of my clients walk into my studio feeling very nervous about getting in front of my camera. It’s a very vulnerable position for them to be in, especially since we’ve been conditioned to be so critical of our own appearance. I can’t do my job successfully unless I provide them with a welcoming and supportive environment. I’ve worked very hard to provide that for each and every client and it’s a huge part of what defines my brand.

My biggest compliment isn’t that my clients love their images. It’s when they tell me they had a great time being photographed and it wasn’t the nightmare experience they anticipated. When they feel that way during their session, they’re just handing me the great images to create.

The customer experience we provide is what defines our businesses. Don’t just “wing it”. Set aside some time to review your customer experience plan. Have options for different types of personalities and communication styles. It’s not just beneficial to our clients, it’s beneficial to the health and brand of our businesses.

It’s been a challenging week, one of those when you say to yourself it couldn’t possibly get any worse. But after a few minutes, when the rush of crazy chemicals leaves your brain, you realize it’s just part of life and you haven’t got it so bad. So, I figured I’d close my week of posting with an image that will hopefully get everyone feeling a bit happy, if only until they continue to scroll.

This is Lola, a very friendly pit bull who came by the studio last weekend with her family for some time in front of my camera. Her “smile” is infectious and she was a ton of fun to photograph! Can’t wait to print this and her other portraits over the next couple of days.

Everyone has different sides to their personality and not one single image can capture all of them. That’s why 99% of my clients select multiple images for different applications that require a different look into another side of you.

Often times when the headshots are done we’ll break out a background and create a portrait, whether it’s for their personal use or to be part of their website and marketing. Some people will book just for the portrait itself. But it allows us to be less focused on creating a purely business asset and show your audience a side of you they may not regularly see. These images are great for your personal branding and establishing a broader appeal to your potential clients.

Do your corporate headshots look this professional and consistent? Here are two simple business reason why they should.

1. All other factors being equal, the businesses that invest in consistent, professional corporate headshots typically get prospective clients’ first call which generates more business and revenue. It’s one of the marketing and branding best practices most businesses ignore.
2. Your team members feel much more appreciated that you’ve taken an interest and invested in how they represent themselves and the business as opposed to using what most other companies use - inconsistent and bad selfies and candids.

Curtis is a U.S. Navy veteran and just graduated with a degree in project management. He stopped by the studio earlier this week for a new headshot to add to his social media profiles and resume. This is one of the images he selected from our session.

Yesterday, another photographer I know posted a beautiful black and white image and we had a short back and forth about we wished more clients wanted them, especially because they can really stand out for your marketing, business portraits, and personal branding.

Since everything went digital, I shoot in color to take advantage of additional color information to have more control over the tones. So any color image you select can I can provide as a black and white image as well. Message me for more info.

Do you want your business/team to leave a better impression on your prospects than your competition does? Then look like you take what you do seriously!

Remember; people are VISUAL creatures. When looking for a service provider, how you present your team leaves a strong imprint on your potential clients and, right or wrong, factors into their decision process on both conscious and subconscious levels.

Last week I was at the Era Living facility in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood creating headshots for new members of their management team. Everyone was great to work with and their images are right on brand with the previous headshots I’ve created for them. When compared to (most) other businesses that stick whatever selfie, candid, or other unprofessional image their team members throw their way, Era Living is more likely to be viewed and trusted to take care of a family’s elder members. Gaining just a single new client more than pays for their investment in consistent professional headshots.

Another on location shoot today, headshots for ERA Living in Seattle. I’ve created headshots for them multiple times this year in several of their locations and their employees are always a lot of fun to work with. I have to admit, when people tell me I’ll be working in an office, I immediately start to tense up wondering just how I’m going to pull it off in such a small space. But, when it’s the executive director’s office, there’s room to spare!

Contact me if you don't have professional, consistent headshots for your staff and we can set something up for you!

Paula Aranda left a really nice 5-Star Google review about her headshot experience here in the studio a few weeks ago. She flew in from Whitefish, MT early that morning for an afternoon session. Kurumi Schulz did a fantastic job with hair and makeup and Paula was just awesome to work with. She ended up selecting seven images from her session, below are a few along with her review.

"Charles was a complete delight to work with! I will definitely come to him again for all my headshot needs from now on. He offers an additional service of hair and makeup- ladies, please take advantage of it! The hair and makeup artist was great and gave me flawless makeup and hair perfect for this type of photography.
Charles made the whole experience so enjoyable, relaxed and enabled me to feel confident and good about my poses. Charles is a wonderful talent and made it such a great experience.” - Paula Aranda

It takes a lot of work, experimenting, and patience when thinking about adding a new service to your business. Lately, I’ve been considering adding fine art dog portraiture as an additional source of revenue. so, I’ve spent the morning working with my Chief Security Officer, Ellie, to see if this might be a viable offering. She wasn’t too happy about taking on a task outside of her job description but I think we’re making progress. One thing I’ve definitely learned is that it’s going to take more than one person to get this done! Stay tuned on progress.

Six Clothing Tips for Your Next Professional Headshot Session

1. Make sure your clothing is ironed and wrinkle free.
2. Solid colors work best.
3. Avoid stripes, plaids, and large busy prints.
4. Stay away from padded shoulders, wide sleeves, or anything frilly. They add width to your frame and can be distracting.
5. Make sure collars fit properly, especially if you’re wearing a tie. Tight collars cut into your neck. Loose collars leave too much of a gap from your neck.
6. Do not wear shirts or sweaters with oversized collars and turtlenecks as they will overwhelm your face in the images. This applies to scarves as well.

There you have it! Let me know if it’s been two years or more since your last professional headshot and we can set up a time to talk.

If you’ve followed my past posts, you may know that I started my photography career photographing live music. I don’t get to do much of that any more but I still love the opportunity to get out and photograph some of my son’s gigs. A few months back, he picked up with the great Seattle band Funky 2 Death performing at the Seamonster Lounge and captured this image of their lead singer. Highly recommend catching them if you’re in the area!

There are posed images, then there are portraits. Portraits capture relationships and personalities. I photographed the Seattle jazz trio Blue Cashmere several months ago and it’s easy to get a sense of how they interact and what it would be like to watch them perform. This applies to both groups and individuals whether they are portraits, headshots, or any other type of image.
