Happy shark week!
When one thinks of Alaska, sharks are probably the last thing that comes to mind, but the salmon shark calls coastal Alaska home. The salmon shark is a relative of the great white shark (and is often mistaken for a young great white due to its size). They can grow up to 10ft long and weigh up to 800 pounds. Salmon sharks get their name from their favorite food source, the salmon. These sharks travel the coast of Alaska during the summer months to follow salmon on their spawning runs. During the winter, salmon sharks can withstand cooler Alaskan water temperatures because they are endothermic - meaning they can regulate their body temperature. Salmon sharks are one of three sharks on the planet that can do this!
