Travel Tips: Passports

This small blue book has been known to cause heartaches and ruin dream vacations, but use my smart tips below to make sure this doesn’t happen to you!

1) Do you have a passport? No? Get one! It is better to apply for a passport when you are not under time or financial constraints. Having a passport will open doors in the future should you decide to take that first cruise, go on that tropical getaway with a special someone, etc.

Many people wait until they are ready to book a trip only to realize the extra expense or that they do not have time to apply and get a passport back!

2) Have a passport? Check the expiration date!!! Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you plan to leave. The renewal process can take several weeks, so if your passport is about to expire, renew it early! Most people are eligible to renew online!

3) MOST IMPORTANTLY- the heartbreaker 💔
Keep your passport in a safe, accessible place! Before you contact me about booking your next vacation, can you lay hands on your passport? A safe or safety deposit box are the best and most common, secure locations to keep your passport.

Invest in a travel wallet to keep it secure while traveling. Make photocopies of your passport’s data page and store them separately from the original which will be helpful in the event it is lost or stolen.

This is one of the times of year when people are updating their luggage. Here are my top tips when it comes to luggage:

1) Buy quality! Luggage can be expensive. Go with a name brand! I look for 360° turning wheels. Be careful when choosing a hard sided case. Cheap hard sided cases will easily break.

2) If you buy luggage that must be checked, you might as well invest in an Apple AirTag! This will help you monitor your luggage when it is not with you.

3) Buy identifiable luggage. Bright colors and patterns may not be your thing, but they are very important when traveling! I do not recommend attaching a ribbon or travel tag to a black case as an identifier only. Those can easily fall off or be cut off. Think about how you will identify your bag from others when traveling!

4) Get packing cubes!!! Yes, they are trendy! Yes, they work!!!

5) Companion pieces are just as important! I love a foldable bag that can expand and has a strap that allows it to slip over the handle of my carry-on for ease of travel. I also make sure my travel backpack also has a back strap that slips over the handle of my suitcase for when my shoulders are tired.
